2011 OCC ADN Students

Published

i am in my first year as an Oakland County Community College ADN student. when i was waiting to get into school there was nobody who was in their first year to answer questions about what to expect. SO i wanted to post this thread and answer any questions that i can for anyone waiting or starting their first year at OCC, so feel free to ask any questions you have and i will do my best to answer them.:)

hello everyone

just thought i would keep everyone in the loop, about what its like to be in the nursing program. its Thurs night and this is the first time ive gotten to sit down and take a deep breath, this week.:eek: we got our curiculum for this semester on monday and i cant believe the amount of work we need to get done in a 6 week period (7 week semester but week 1 is already over). found out from a friend that 50% of their med surg class failed. another 19 didnt pass lab. the 50% of med surg class can still go on and complete ob and pych but the poor people who failed lab cannot move on. either way none of the people who have failed a course will be graduating in spring of 2012. they will all have to wait until next janurary to repeat their failed classes and if they fail another class they are out. i havent failed, dont intend too, but somehow just knowing this makes me nervous. well back to work. anyone waiting on letters good luck to you. for those of you that have 3.9 and above. your really worried? i mean really? that would be the largest jump in gpa ever. i would imagine that it will be up around 3.80 to 3.85 cutoff. remember there was over 600 students last year and the cutoff was 3.79 before the accelerated program added 30 more. anyway good luck everyone:)

Thanks whosurdaddy! This info is so important because it helps me mentally prepare myself for what is to come. I knew the program would be hard, but had know idea it would be so hard that 1/2 the students would fail. Just makes me want to buckle down even more when I start.

you will do fine mocha as long as you dont let things get to you. some things are out of your control. its hard to believe that 1/2 a class can fail, but it happened at least i was told it happened. i did see the test results for the entire semester and yes 1/2 the class failed each test, so i believe it had to be somewhere around 50%. med surg is the hardest 1st year class out of the 4 classes. when i say things are out of your control i mean that you can study and study but if the prof doesnt base the test on material covered in class or from the book there is little you can do. out of the 50 students we've lost i think most of them just couldnt hack the program. it wasnt just about failing, a lot of people can not handle the work load and the stress.

mocha once your in keep your eyes on the prize

Thanks! Will do :-)

Whorsurdaddy, did you use any supplemental books to help you pass med surg? I thought about buying a med surg book from amazon to help me answer those type of test questions. I hear that Med Surg is hard for every nursing program and I want to be prepared

i havent had med surg yet, but yes im buying the straight A med surg book and i have 2 nclex books. i may even buy another one i saw in the book store. i figure you can never have too many. from what ive seen its more who you have than what you know. there are 2 med surg instructors and one has a much higher pass rate than the other. so if you get the hard one your in trouble, if you get the fair one then you will pass if you study hard..........not fair i know but not sure theres anything anyone can do about it.

Congratulations to everyone !!!:yeah::D

I also got in I had a 3.9...:nurse:

Let to good times begin:yeah:

Thank you whosurdaddy for all of your posts:up:

congrats to you headofhouse4life...........now the fun begins eh?

I wonder what's so hard about Med/surg...

i haven't had it yet, but from what others have told me is that its very fast paced and you get certain prof's that pull questions from thin air that had nothing to do with lecture or readings assigned. not fair but you quickly realize all the things that arent fair about this program.

I passed my first checkoff yesterday! Im not so sure I can do that again next week for blood pressure, going to open lab to practice.
