i am in my first year as an Oakland County Community College ADN student. when i was waiting to get into school there was nobody who was in their first year to answer questions about what to expect. SO i wanted to post this thread and answer any questions that i can for anyone waiting or starting their first year at OCC, so feel free to ask any questions you have and i will do my best to answer them.:)

1. I have a 3.972...will I make it? lol
2. How are the instructors? I read a lot about bullying instructors on these boards and I hope OCC has none.
3. Do you ever feel overwhelmed? If so, why?
thank you.
congrats on the gpa..........thats really impressive.........wish mine was that high!
the instructors are a mixed bag. there is only something like a handfull of full time staff and the rest are adjuncts
the full timers are all outstanding. Most of the adjuncts are really good too but some seem like they are out to prove how tough they can be. And they are very inconsistant in Lab but you'll find that out all in good time. Waaaahhhhaaaa......thats my evil laugh.
i think overwhelmed is how you live in nursing school.
if you earned your gpa taking one class at a time, or had to take several classes over, then your in for a real challenge. if you took a couple classess at a time and still got all A's then you might be pretty well prepared for the pressure.
Fundamentals is 3 hrs a week with a test every 2 weeks and then a final exam. all profs are the same
the tests are nclex style questions.
the lab is twice a week either tue/wed or thur/fri and are also 3 hrs each class.
there is something due in lab just about every week. while also studying for exams.
you also have clincals starting around week 6
oh and first you have pharm but thats just one class and its not hard but does require a lot of memorization
i can go on and on but i dont want to bore or scare you too much
Thank you. Sounds like what I expected. I've never been so prematurely excited in all my life!

Hi whosurdaddy
Have you heard anything about the drop out or failure rate in the program?
Another question from me as well: How much time per week do you find yourself studying? I used to study 20 hours a week or more for A&P classes, so I'm used to it, (though it can be a downer).
they told us that they graduated 200 students this spring. that would be out of 237 (doesnt include the accelerated students) so they lost 37 students. out of those 200 though im sure they graduated some of the students that had failed a class along the way. so no one knows the exact number lost along the 20 months of class. i can tell you that we lost 3 this semester (before the final, dont know how many failed). that was just my class and their were 5 more classess. I will find out who didnt pass Fundamentals after Jan 10th when we go back.
i found myself studying every second i had free, but i also have a job for 15 hrs a week. in all seriousness, studying for tests is something you do in your spare time. like i said there is something happening every week, especially once you start clinicals. You have a test every 2 weeks, Nursing care plans, Lab check offs, Lab tests and 16 hours of clincals every week after week 6

Hi!
Thanks for starting this thread. Here are a few questions that come to mind:
Are clinicals ever held on weekends or on the midnight/graveyard shift?
Are theory classes ever held on weekends?
Are there many papers to write?
Are most exams essay style or multiple choice?
Is homework submitted via email or via an online course management system?
What time does the earliest class start?
What time does the latest class end?
Do students get any choice whatsoever as to what section they are assigned for a given course or are sections assigned randomly?
Thanks in advance!
hi wendyyvonne
first off on the theory classess. No classess are held on the weekends. Theory class is almost always on Monday. they are either early 9am or 2pm
clinicals are either tue/wed or thur/fri and they start at 7am at whatever hosp or ECF site you are assigned too
As for papers yes there is a paper on gerintology due the second day of your ECF rotation. after that you will be writing nursing care plans.
all exams are multiple choice with 2 question being multiple, multiple.
homework consists of prep points which is a study guide that comes with your fundamentals. selected questions are due from each chapter each week (very easy) the other homework is an online series of quizzes for medical terminology that you must complete and hand in by week 11 (also very easy)
as for choices........you have no choice in anything. you are assigned your class, time, ECF, hospital, insturctors etc. the only choice you are given is when do you want to come into lab and practice or try a second, third, forth time at a lab checkoff.
Thanks so much for the info, whosurdaddy!
Sorry, but what does ECF mean? Thanks again!
ECF= extended care facility
im pretty sure this is a test of everyones will power and how much they really want to be a nurse.
