i am in my first year as an Oakland County Community College ADN student. when i was waiting to get into school there was nobody who was in their first year to answer questions about what to expect. SO i wanted to post this thread and answer any questions that i can for anyone waiting or starting their first year at OCC, so feel free to ask any questions you have and i will do my best to answer them.:)

to those who want to know the drop rate or failure rate

2010 class started with 237 students, the new lists are posted and we are down to 202 students:crying2:

WOW!!! already that's a shame. If that keeps up you will be down to half the class by grad time.:crying2:

we were told that fundamentals is the class that eliminates the most students because you have a lot of people who took one class at a time and aren't use to the work load. its also the class where some people decide that nursing really isnt for them.

Hello

I would like to know if we are allowed to use an ipod touch in school and/or clinicals?

Thanks

yes you can carry your ipod for clincals (only) if you have downloaded your drug guide and other stuff on it

the only thing i would worry about is that some instructors are older and might think your just looking at your phone or text mess-ing. but they did tell us we can use them

The second year is hard, as well. You have a little more time b/c you don't have lab anymore, but it is still difficult. I know a lot of students who failed med/surg 1, m/s 2 (ortho-neuro), or m/s 3 (cardiac) and many that only passed by 1-4 points. Good luck to all of you :)

Hi cjbacjba

In your opinon why is the second year so hard? What are some of the reasons that so many students have failed in m/s 1-3?

The second year is hard b/c they expect more of you and the tests are super hard. It also depends on which theory teacher you have. For m/s 2 the instructor that I had did not test on the material that she lectured on. So essentially, we had teach ourselves ortho-neuro. You need to make sure you read, read, read and also record lectures (or take good notes) . A few clinical instructors are very difficult. I know one that routinely fails 1-2 students per semester (out of 6-7). I guess it makes us stronger!

it may be ok if you didnt have to wait up to 9 months for the next class to meet. thats not making me stronger its making me poor for another 9 months:)

9 months?

That's true.... I would hate to fail and have to wait until they offer the class again. And yes, Househead4life, you do have to wait until they offer the class again.

yep if i would have failed fundamentals, i would have had to wait until next sept to take the class again

thats something they dont tell you about until your half way through the semester, at least my instructor didnt

there was a girl i was in clinical with who had to do that
