i am in my first year as an Oakland County Community College ADN student. when i was waiting to get into school there was nobody who was in their first year to answer questions about what to expect. SO i wanted to post this thread and answer any questions that i can for anyone waiting or starting their first year at OCC, so feel free to ask any questions you have and i will do my best to answer them.:)
househead4life i wouldnt begin to tell you how to manage your time, but the first thing they told us at the conference was that you will not pass class if you work full time. I don't know of many students who even maintained any job let alone worked full time. the nursing program says that you should work no more than 24 hrs a week and honestly that seems like a lot to me. Most of my classmates that did work part time were planning on quitting work to focus on school.
it might be ok the first 5 weeks but after you get into your clinicals i dont know how you would have time to study, do your nursing care plans, study for lab and work 16hrs a week in clinicals.
II'm wanting to apply for OCC's LPN program, Anne36 aren't you about to start it? Is the LPN program a little less intense as far as working full time while attending goes? I work 3 12's, and if need be I'll work every Saturday to free up my week days. Do you know what your schedule will be like?
Thanks for all the tips, I wish all the Nursing students were as friendly as you are. I have been acquainted with a few over the last year that are not willing to give me the time of day. Some of them really come off as having a superior attitude toward a lowly applicant, or mabye they are just cranky because of their workload , I dont know. On the flip side, I met some very nice first year students today that were willing to give me an idea of what pharm is like, one of them even had my Professor!
obviously some people are just jerks. but anne36 you should know that from your own dealings with fellow students that for the last year and a half or longer you've been competing for a very slim 237 seats. i guess some people who have made it into the program have forgotten that they are no longer in competition with each other. As for me, well i really wish i had someone to tell me what i was in for. all you ever hear are rumors and almost all are false, and some are just vicious lies told to scare you. hopefully when you get to your pharm class you will make about 29 new best friends. i loved just about everyone in my fundamentals class and we all became good friends because no one understands what your going through like they do.
you must pass a math test at the begining of every semester. its only 1 10 question test but if you fail 3 times your out.............scared yet?!?!!??!...........lol.
the test is pretty much like the one i sent. but yes they do get harder as you move through school. i havent seen the level 3 test (highest) but i hear its not so easy.

Hi
I have a question about working full time. You stated that you work 15hrs on nights and the course work takes a lot of time to complete. So do you think that it is posible to work full time and do you know of any students that are working full time and keeping up in class.
Thanks
