Obstetric Nursing in Brisbane for CA Nursing Board

Published

Hello Folks, can any of you help me with this please? I am an RN here in Brisbane (Australia) but did my studies in Singapore. Upon evaluation, CA Nursing board tells me that i have to do Obstetric Nursing theory and practical.

Does anyone out there know where in Brisbane i can do that, which is recognised by CA Nursing board?

Help me please!

Why don't you ask the CA nursing board?

Thread moved to the International Forum where it is more appropriate.

You need to complete a course that has both clinical as well as theory instruction at the same time and it has to be done in an approved School of Nursing. This is what the BRN will tell you, as well as every other BON in the US as well. The BRN will not be able to give specifics for the actual courses in your country.

Suggest that you contact the local nursing schools in your area to see if they can fit you into their program if there is an open spot, or you can easily do the training for about six weeks in a community college in the US.

This actually happens quite often with those that train in either the UK or Australia.

It is something that is fairly easy to do.

You are so wonderful! Thanks for the prompt reply. I asked some universities here in Brisbane but it seems they have midwifery courses (post grad) for 1 year. And i am not doing that!!

I have a tourist visa to the USA so i might go and do that 6 weeks course you mentioned. Are there some in Sacramento?

The Nursing Board does not really help in this, i already asked them, they tell me it is for me to find the school! I studied in Singapore and it seems it is short in Obstetrics. Once i get to the USA, i can stay 6 months there. What are the chances for me to go there, finish this OBS course, pass my nclex and get a job and then a green card? But then, there will be another problem, CA Nursing Board doesnt give out licenses without SSN. Why must it be so difficult i wonder!!

With retrogression there is no way you can go to the US and expect to change your status and stay and work. Which country are you a citizen from? Many threads discussing Ca and SSN so would suggest a search but they always haven't given license without it.

i am from Nepal but am a permanent resident of Australia. I am a newbie here to this site. This is so wonderful, to get advice and help so promptly. I mean it feels good to share your problems here and hope for a solution. Hope i keep getting more advice and i can then decide on the best course to take.

Thank You!

Here is my plan. Please advice me if you think this is not workable.

1)I have a tourist visa so i go to USA and do that 6 weeks course on OBS.

2)I come back to Australia, and then do my Nclex in Sydney.

3)I will get that paperwork saying "provide SSN and get license" from CNB. I go to California, get an employer or hire a Nursing agent for my process.

How does this sound? And which step is not workable and what are the other options? Please advice me! Thanks in Advance.

Then you are looking at a few years wait due to retrogression, nothing stopping you going to the US and being a guest student you just will not be able to stay and work by adjusting your visa

You do not need to go back to California once you have passed NCLEX you can do it all via phone and online. Depends on where in Ca you are looking as I am sure there are some areas which are not accepting foreign trained nurses, sure Suzanne will be able to give more info on that.

You are still looking at a few years wait

You are awesome Silverdragon! Thanks! Well, why is it so difficult when it was mentioned in a documentary that USA has like 200 thousand Nurses shortage? And there are some Nursing agencies advertising "Get your Green Cards in 18 months or 2 years. Are these just publicity stunts?

Why doesnt the US gov start working visas for Nurses instead of Green Cards? Are there any such plans? Do you think these things will change if Barrack wins?

And finally, do you think i have a better chance if i further my Nursing education there instead and try it from there? Anyways, thank you so much Silverdragon for taking the trouble to fill me in!

There isn't really a nursing shortage in the US but a shortage of nurses willing to put up with poor conditions. The demand for nurse visas is like other types ie IT is a lot higher than what is allocated. Certain countries have a higher demand than others. GC are in my opinion better for nurses than other visas as you have to be paid the same as a USC and you have the protection if you loose your job of not having to leave the US within x amount of days. Who knows what will happen after the elections but I doubt the gates will open fully

Agencies can advertise all that they want. But only the US government issues visas and we have been under a retrogression since October, 2006.

If one holds a passport from Australia, then they can get the E-3 visa, which is a treaty visa and they are not affected by the retrogression. But as a permanent resident of Australia, you do not qualify for this.

Sacramento has several community colleges, would check with them. You want to attend as a guest student, you will not be receiving a degree from them.

The College of San Mateo also offers this and they are located about 25 miles south of San Francisco when they have openings in their schedule.
