Barack Obama's health plan takes shape

Source

If Congress were to take a vote on a health reform bill today, Democrats and Republicans would find a surprising level of agreement-so much so that the broad outlines of a consensus plan already are taking shape.

Sick or healthy, rich or poor, all Americans would be guaranteed access to health insurance.

In fact, they'd probably be required to purchase it-perhaps through mandates in the law that would include stiff tax penalties for anyone who tried to opt out.

Newly created insurance marketplaces would make finding a plan as easy as shopping for cheap airfare. People could keep their coverage, even if they switched jobs. And they might be able to choose between private insurers and a government-backed plan.

But here's the catch-none of this would come free, with the wealthiest Americans likely to face higher taxes to help pay for coverage for all.

It's hard to believe that only three months ago, health care advocates worried that President Barack Obama would drop the health reform issue from his first-year agenda. Now, with an August deadline to pass a bill, a compromise that once seemed unimaginable is considered quite possible, both sides say.

Better to take the time to get it right.

Or at least the best Congress can do.

I see where you are coming from Herring. My fear however is that Congress won't get it done at all. They are certainly not going to do it right anyway. Single-payer would be doing it right, at single-payer isn't going to happen.

Ultimately, if they are unable to have a bill by the August recess because of Democratic infighting, what's the next excuse they are going to use?

2010 is right around the corner, and the dynamic of the Congress could be completely different by then.

And now, for some health care reform humor, with charts! Courtesy of Ezra Klein from the WaPo.

John Boehner's office tries to make the House Dems' plan look really scary, via chart! :lol2:

And that, pretty much, is as scary as Boehner's chart guy can make this plan look for the average American. Consumers will have to purchase health-care coverage and will be given financial help to make sure they can afford it. It's about as creepy as your mom telling you to eat lunch and handing you a crumpled $5 before you board the bus in the morning.
Here's the Dems' response to Boehner's chart:

Not to be outdone, The New Republic then made a chart of the current health-care system, in all of its convoluted glory!

Unfortunately, the prez had the prez of the ANA on camera. The impression he gave the public, "she represents 2.5 million (or thereabouts) nurses and supports this bill!"

She is not my voice.

All of us in the medical field will be affected, gravely, by this.

It's a scam and a sham!

"office of minority health" gee, sounds to me like we will be addressing health care the same way the employment quotas are handled. "office of majority health"

According to U.S. census, one group alone, blacks, are the majority and out number caucasions, 5 to 1.

So, it will be very interesting to see how this plays out.

Meanwhile, the proof will be in the pudding. You think you are under paid now? Fasten your seatbelts!

You may want to get your passports ready for a country where there is still some semblance of sanity and before we are told we can't leave the country due to "mandatory national service"!

That assertion is baseless and void of reality. Canadian Nurses make pretty much the same as we do. I see no viable reason to suspect that nurses will take a pay cut.

Well doctors and hospitals will take a major pay cut so that will trickle down to nurses too.

When a doc or hospital gets reimbursed 20%, do you think that is coming solely out of their pocket? I dont think so. So, at least per hour rates will go down.

With proper lobbying form nursing organizations, instead of worrying about getting 30-40 bucks per hour they could be championing for 60-70, why? If there is to be an overall cost reduction, wellness has to be a component of this plan. When most medical students are opting to specialize, the shortage in GP's will have to be filled by someone. Nurses could write the ending of this story if they so choose!

You will find another thread under Social and Health Care Coverage Activism decrying any lobbying on health care issues. Nurses could write the ending of this story, but nurses are every bit as divided as the rest of the country.

Please call your Rep & Senators to let them know they need to SLOW DOWN and get it right. What is at jeopardy is one of the best health care systems in the world. Chicago-style politics are being used to strong-arm this through before the public realizes the shortfalls. What are the issues? I]t does not reduce health care costs, it does not address current Medicare/-aid waste & fraud, it disallows future enrollment in a private plan, it mandates insurance, it does not address the excess cost due to illegals, it allows taxpayer funding for abortion, it does not address misuse or overuse of the health care system, and it includes excess UNION control. Check out Subtitle D of the House bill. It creates a 'Pipeline to nursing' which alters the career ladder to nursing, and includes training programs that would be jointly administered by the Health Care provider AND LABOR ORGANIZATIONS. It establishes a Health Advisory Board, of which 1 of 5 representatives must be a labor UNION representative. (Payback for the SEIU, maybe??).

]WAKE UP, NURSES -- AND CALL YOUR CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVES TODAY!! The ANA sold us out!

Making the same money per hour and the same take home are two very different things if you are taxed at a higher rate then you will see less.
