Obama health care law upheld.

Nurses Activism

Published

I think this is a major victory for the country. I of course know it poses many challenges, but the bottom line is, everyone has the right to recieve care. That being said I think it will challenge nurses and doctors alike to do more education, and focus more or prevention.

Everyone has a right to healthcare? What does this mean? Everyone does already have access to healthcare to some extent, so I presume you meant to say "free and unlimited healthcare". I have heard the "everyone has a right to healthcare" line before by the President, his liberal friends, and others like yourself, but no one has explained specifically what this means or how it's going to work.

So, you want to see a physician. You want to see one now. That is your right. You want to use the doctor's services. If it's your right, then no one can deny you, no one can say no. How about surgery?. You want a surgery, nevermind if you truly need one or not, you want one so if it is your right so no one can deny you the surgery. How about your oxycodone prescription. It's for your health, so it is your right. No one can say "no, you can't have the oxycodone." It's your right to have this product that someone else produced.

You are going to go to the hospital. You are going to use the hospital, it's physicians, nurses, techs, scanners, operating rooms, food, housekeepers, medication, etc. They can't say no. It's your right to go and consume these things and use their services. They say it's time for you to go. Oh no they don't! It's your right to be there.

I know there are several of you "healthcare is a right" people here. Someone, please explain what this means, how it's going to work, and where exactly does this "right" come from!

I think it is hard for anyone to have a educated opinion on the matter as I am sure most people have not read the entire law, much less have a degree in economics to understand the effects (both good and bad) that this new plan will have for everyone. This will definitely be a 20/20 hindsight issue.

Although there are some great things in the plan (insurance companies must use at least 80% of income on claim reimbursement) there are going to be significant cuts in payments to hospitals. Guess what those cuts will mean to us in nursing? And I am not talking about the ANP nurse.

From what I have read so far, the plan calls for caps on reimbursement to hospitals and doctors "not to exceed 15%" etc., and there are also proposed limits on what types of surgeries and treatments can be performed - meaning you might not get what you or your doctor ask for. There are a lot of European countries declaring bankruptcy right now. We should all be careful for what we wish for, or better yet, how much we wish for. They really should have fixed Medicare and Medicaid first before taking on another one-payer system which has significant differences for treatment and payment compared to our current system. I don't think this will even be close to what we think it will be.

Have said this in response to other posts, wish persons would stop saying this law helps "everyone". There is no "everyone" and the law is not universal healthcare.

If you are too poor, unemployed, an illegal alien, a legal alien (in certain cases) and several other situations this bill does not do much if anything in terms of providing health insurance. These people will be left to the status quo, that is cobble together whatever care they can as best they know how.

These folks are going to have greater access to medicaid, or have lower cost plans available to them. Thee illegal will continue to clog up the ER for basic care.

Considering that Comcast phone/internet/cable service only costs $99.00/month for a family a four and insurance for a healthy 20 year old girl with no preexisting conditions would cost over $500.00 a month, yes I'm paying for cable and internet, but cannot afford health care because it would be five times more expensive to cover only one person. Thank God for sliding fee clinics. Thanks for being so understanding! Way to not create a hostile environment. I didn't attack you, I don't deserve to be attacked by you. I think you owe me an apology.

I admit my reply was snarky, but it wasn't a personal attack...lets not exaggerate on the cost of health care okay. There is no way the plan for a healthy 20 year old girl with no preexisting conditions will be over $500 a month, unless you choose one of the best plans out there. I have a middle of the road plan for $92 a month...so your $99 cable internet bill could actually buy insurance for one of your kids...but you'd rather have entertainment at home, and have the citizenry supplement your health care...so that makes two things you think your entitled too...health care and an undeserved apology.

Uh oh...someone just threw illegal alien into the hat...gonna be fun now.

An earlier poster laced a link testing knowledge re the ACA. Just curious as to how many took that quiz and what were there results. Particularly if they posted responds before learning about the act.

I am not quite sure where you read that I said the plan would be "good for everyone?" Not even close.

There could be soooooo many other options attempted before this law goes into effect. How about if you want welfare, tell us who the father is so the government can go after them for child support. Or better yet, charge the father with statutory rape as should be done in the 50% or more cases I see at our hospitals of 13-16 year old girls getting pregnant by men over 20 years of age. Just one of the numerous ideas that won't be implemented because of misconstrued/ misinterpreted civil rights. Funny, I have to take a drug test to keep my job and when I wanted a cell phone, part of the money I spent on the fees went to those 'less fortunate' so they could have a cell phone too. (Yep, thats a new law too - The Federal Universal Service Fund).

So no, DoGoodThenGo, I don't think this plan will be good for everybody, just the opposite, I think it is going to hurt us worse in the long run because it does nothing to foster personal responsibility; and that is really the heart of our healthcare problem.

Ok, maybe it's the heat but I don't get why you're jumping all over me. I said the scheme does not cover everyone.

Uh oh...someone just threw illegal alien into the hat...gonna be fun now.

Why? Merely stated a fact that anyone can read in the ObamaCare law.

However if one is an illegal alien and working on the books for a place that offers healthcare and somehow obtained a SSN, then suppose it doesn't matter as such persons would have health insurance. As for the others they are out of luck other than what federal/state programs are in place.

ObamaCare is more about controlling, expanding, and regulating health insurance/Medicaid than anything else.

I wasn't jumping all over you, I was giving my opinion and you made a comment about my post. Just a rebuttal. I agree with you that the plan will not work for everyone. If the government is not careful, it will work for even less people than it does now.

Talk to the thousands of people that have paid insurance premiums for years and been denied when they got sick or the thousands upon thousands that are turned away from doctors offices every year because they cannot get passed the first question....How are you going to pay? Or worse the thousands upon thousands that are "allowed" to enter the hospital only to be put out without getting the treatment they truly deserve as another human being. "First do no harm" ever heard of that? Shoot... pretty soon in good ol Mississippi women will no longer be able to choose what they can and can't do with there own bodies!
