What's the weirdest baby name?

Specialties Ob/Gyn Nursing Q/A

Hi, I was wondering about some of those weird names that you've probably encountered in L&D and PP. I remember when I had my maternity rotation a couple of weeks ago, one of the nurses said she remembers a patient that named her child Placenta. I couldn't believe it that some child has to live his life named after disgusting afterbirth!

Deja Vu??? :smackingf You KNOW that girl is gonna be dancin' on a pole somewhere when she grows up. :uhoh3: What ARE they thinking?

My oldest daughter is Miranda, we too wanted something that was not overly common, but not hard to pronounce/spell, and to make sure there were not five girls with the same name in her class. We named our second daughter Mikayla and now we're trying to come up with a third M name because I"m 22 weeks pregnant with my third girl. Any suggestions?

Yeah, I'm hoping you put Miranda in with the other names just because she was part of the family and not because you think it's wierd.

I love my name. It's normal enough that people can spell and pronounce it, but it's still rare enough that it's special.

I got called Randy in grade school and I HATED it. Probably because there were three boys in my grade with the same name and they were all dorks.

Now my only nicknames are Mir (rhymes with fir, not Meer like the space station) or Mirry. Didn't think about how it sounds like Murray until someone asked me if that was my real name. Oh well, it beats Randy, which your co-worker can have all to herself.

Go to the SSA.gov website (Social Security Admin) and click on the baby names list. The gov't keeps track of names registered on SSN cards as babies.

You can pick a year, like last year, and look at the top 1000 names of girls. That way, you can find a girl name that starts w/ an M in the 100-300 range: not uncommon, but common enough.

Some "M" names in that range for 2005:

90. Marissa

92. Melanie

104. Melissa

(Miranda is 144; Mikayla 141)

151. Margaret

163. Mckenzie

166. Mariana

208. Mckenna

218. Mallory

239. Monica

309. Melody

How about "Marianne" - it is the french spelling.

This is in response to the poster asking for names that begin with the letter "M".

And yes, I did name one of my twins "Marianne Elizabeth", that is why I like the name so much.

hmm what I've seen...

Lil Goldie (Male)

Latrina (female)

Mon Cherie (female)

and my favorite...MacPassion (male)

A lady I work with named her daughter Princess Yazmin .... yes Princess is her first name and Yazmin is her middle name

How bout Mackenzie?

The name Mercedes has showed up on this thread several times as a strange name. Actually, among Hispanics the name has nothing to do with the automobile (the car was named after a young girl of Spanish background who had this name). The name refers to Santa Maria de las Mercedes, or Our Lady of the Mercies. It is an old Spanish name and is used often in both Spain and Latin America. Maybe in North American inner cities parents who name their child this (along with Pontiac and Lumina) are thinking of a fancy car but among Hispanics, chances are they are naming their girl after the Virgin Mary. I thing I also saw Pilar listed as an odd name. Again, it comes from a Spanish title of the Virgin Mary - Our Lady of the Piller.

I worked at a hospial in Indiana where a woman from Africa ( An exchange student from Perdu's wife) named her baby Mechonium. The baby had some thin mech at birth and that is when the women heard the word for the first time. The RN's and ward clerk tried to talk her out of it but she said that nobody she knew would know what the word really ment and she thought it was pretty. To each their own!
