Hi there, anyone getting ready to interview in the next couple months for the Oakland University Accelerated nursing program? Thought this would be a good place in share experiences! Good luck!
Also, does anybody in the program already have any advice for the next couple agonizing months? Thanks in advance!
One more thing, Pharm was great pretty straightforward. Pathophys with that prof was tricky. The quiz questions had tricky wording, so you had to definitely read the questions very carefully to ensure you weren't missing something. For example, the question would have the word impermeable instead of permeable. If you are trying to beat the clock and pace yourself you may overlook that small difference and choose that answer. However, he did ask questions that were critical thinking questions. Stuff like patient A presents with this symptom and that, what condition does he have. His idea of a quiz was always at least 30+ questions. In my book, that's a test not a quiz.
Hi, I had Patho with the guy as well. I would tend to agree with SA that the exams/quizzes were a little tricky - especially the first third. But overall I would recommend him. There are two papers which are really easy - one page(3 paragraphs). I knew a few people in my group who wrote like one paragraph and got pretty good marks(higher than I would give). If I had any complaints is there is a ton of reading and an exam due every week. There are few if any breaks. But later in the class the exams will cover just one chapter vs. two. Also, his powerpoint slides are very detailed - you don't need to take any notes.
i have the lady for Pharm and I have heard she is very good.
For those of you that know folks already in the nursing program at OU, do you know what materials we need right in the beginning? For example, uniforms, stethoscope, nursing kits, etc. I know it's early but I was thinking that if I could gradually buy that stuff and get it out the way, or have it gifted to me for mother's day, birthday, etc. that would be great.
Hi, anyone hearing anything new about the job market for nurses in the next year or two for SE Michigan?? I have heard that it's more difficult to get a job as a nurse now than in the past. Possibly this has something to do with nurses delaying retirement, hiring freezes, economy, etc. But I have heard from a few nurses that it can take some time to find a good job(3-6 months). I am hoping by the time we are done, things will be better. Just wondering if anyone out there heard anything (good, bad or indifferent).
I have a friend that finished the program at OU last August. It did take her a couple of months to find a job. She didn't like her first position, had an offer from another place that she turned down and just recently accepted and started at a new job. So, there are positions available, you just have to be patient and find them.
If you're willing to move there are several states that have extreme shortages and lots of available jobs.
Thanks nursejms2011. I talked to my sister who is a CRNA and she said the demand for nurses should pick up by the time we're finished. It looks like some hospitals have hiring freezes right now and other nurses are delaying retirement due to the economy and layoffs, etc. I was just worried because my instructors at Red Cross said 'everyone is going in nursing right now' so they were not certain about the demand in the future. I think we'll be fine but I don't really want to move from this area.

Hey SASlong....
You could probabbly get moved up into the fall cohort if someone drops or doesn't meet the requirements on time. I still need to take pharm. and patho. in the fall for my Jan. start. ... not quite sure why you would be in May cohort if you have everything completed by now.
Who did you have for path. and pharm?....how are they?....do you recommend them or someone else?.... any insight would be appreciated ... thanks
