NYU, SUNY Brooklyn, or Columbia???

Anyone on here wanna share their experiences or decisions about these 3 schools? I sent in my Columbia deposit for the ETP program, then found out I was accepted to the Accelerated BSN programs at NYU and SUNY. I just want to make sure I made the right decision!! If any of you has attended or is planning to attend any of these schools, how did you like it/what made you choose it?? I know SUNY is waaaaayy cheaper than the other 2, but I don't want to base my decision just on that....

BTW I do plan on getting an MSN eventually, which is why ETP is appealing, but then, I figure I :p could always go to grad school if I went to NYU or SUNY, right??

My personal experience with communicating with a SUNY school led me to decline their offer of acceptance. I can tell you this was not the Brooklyn site.

SUNY is having cutbacks, but you might be okay with Brooklyn. One idea is to talk with a professor or two, or try asking a question or two of those in administration positions. See how they treat you. I think this is very important.I personally know I could not have dealt with the program I'd applied to at a SUNY school. By the way, my BSN was cheaper from a private school than if I had gone to a state school- but I had plenty of scolarship money.

Silly me- I just reread my post. You'd think after getting "scholarship money" I'd have learned to spell it right....

what specialty did you go in for? and were you at the visiting day?

check out the "Direct Entry - how hard to get in?" thread on the pre-nursing board. it's loooooong, but there was a good amount of soul-searching over there that might help. also I answered your post on prestige over on the general nursing thread.

It looks like I'm sticking with Columbia. I finally got NYU's financial aid package and it sucks!! Amazing how expensive as Columbia appears, with their scholarship they end up being cheaper than many other schools!! As for SUNY, they seem to be really disorganized, like calling me to remind me to send in my deposit without ever having told me how much the deposit is or when it is due! Plus I haven't received any financial aid package from them and I'm sure they don't have the funding to provide much scholarship anyway. I did expect more from NYU though!

Elizabells: I did read your comment on the prestige question, I can totally relate! I'm embarrassed to tell people where I'm going, like they'll think I'm stuck up and bragging when I say "Columbia"! Lame, huh?

As for specialty, I applied for Psychiatric, but I may actually want to do Adult NP or Family to have more options... :p

Congratulations on the aid package to Columbia. I also think it is wise to avoid the SUNY and CUNY schools. Unfortunately I believe the budget cuts are effecting their organization at the administrative level, but also at the professorial level. I've found them to be unusually terse and rude. But again, I'm glad I had the chance to talk with them personally before committing myself to a program under their auspices. Unfortunately I believe that there are many at the SUNY schools who realize ( or feel) the student is at their mercy cue to the low tuition.

That's the same stuff I've been experiencing with Downstate---very lame...one applicant to one of their programs was getting the run-around until she told them she had been accepted elsewhere and then Downstate got a bit of a pulse.....But Columbia's annual tuition is like $32K or more??? To be affordable, they must give everyone a scholarship of $30K???? Congrats to you--are you moving up to Washington heights? I live in Bklyn , which is at least one attractive thing about SUNY Downstate's Flatbush location....:coollook:

Oh, finally someone going to Downstate!! :p Congratulations :balloons: , I understand they are a very well regarded program! So they haven't sent you any aid info yet either? SO weird! Columbia tuition is actually more horrific than $32K, actually about $56K! But it actually comes out cheaper than NYU, with the scholarship, and with the shorter program length (12 months vs. 15 months). Apparently NYU also has some program where you can get $10k a year if you agree to work at one of their hospital affiliates after graduation, but I missed the March deadline for that program! And I just got their aid package yesterday! Anyway, Columbia is also probably my best choice because I already live on the Upper West Side and so it's the easiest commute for me!! :p Especially since the accelerated programs are so intensive, I think it's important that we live nearby to reduce stress!!

Yaayy Vicky! See you in forty six days. I'll be the one still looking around in disbelief, seeing as how my high school counselor told me I'd be lucky to end up in a gutter and I'm going to Columbia . Nyah nyah.

I'll be in Downstate's accelerated program this summer, so it's good to see another going. :)

I think the disorganization you speak of with Downstate exists with most accelerated programs, especially new ones. A friend of mine is currently a student at Columbia, and she complains about the same things students from Downstate complain about.

If possible, can u state ur experience at Downstate, and also how the job market and starting pay was/is? Do u think it is doable for a woman raising 2 children, practically alone? Thanks

Well, I haven't started at Downstate yet, but will be happy to let you know more as time goes on. As far as the job market is for NYC (Manhattan), the starting pay for new RNs is around $63,000 to $64,000/yr. I know this becauase I spoke to a couple of new RNs with Associates degrees at the hospital I work at, and this is what they told me. I would imagine a BSN may start slightly higher.

As far a completing an accelerated BSN program and being a single mother, I would say that must be incredibly difficult. I don't have children, so I'm really not the one to ask, but I have read others on these boards who have done it. I think the accelerated program will be very time consuming, especially during the summer semesters, so time spent with your children may be a difficult thing to do. I guess it would also depend on their ages and what sort of help you may get from family/friends. So, I don't think the program would be impossible, but you would probably have to be very efficient with your time, and may need to give up other things i.e. social life, some studying when you really want to but not able to due to children, etc.
