NYU ABSN Fall 2017

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi everyone!

I was just wondering if anyone was applying to NYU for the ABSN program in fall 2017? I'm kind of nervous because my GPA isn't the highest since I had to work all four years to help pay for school which took away from my studying time. I do have work experience in the health care field and a little over 100 hours of health related volunteering. Also, how is everyone planning on paying for school since it is soo expensive?

Hi Guys,

I wanted to see if anyone could give me some advice on whether or not it makes sense for me to apply at this point. I wanted to apply to NYU but decided against it, because I believed I wouldn't have my pre-requisites completed in time. I now have the time to get them done this summer (nutrition and develop. Psych.) and have 3 days left to apply to the program.

I unfortunately don't have enough time to request a letter of recommendation from a colleague or professor, which I think REALLY hurts any chance I have. My first degree GPA is 3.6 and was in communications and marketing- I have zero healthcare experience as my career change was a quarter life crisis (another negative :( )

My pre-reqs so far are:

Anatomy I & II with lab - A and A

Chemistry - Lecture, A- Lab, B-

Microbiology with lab - B

Statistics - B+

Developmental Psych and Nutrition pending

Any advice is appreciated. This is a stressful time. Thank you!

orchid17, I'm never going to dissuade someone from applying to get an education at a school they want to attend. Worse thing that can happen is you get rejected and you're out the application fee. If you still want to do nursing at NYU after that, you'll have time to strengthen whatever areas you feel need beefing up and you can apply next round.

Hi Orchid17,

yes! It's possible that you still make it to their deadline! Bring your transcripts to their admission office directly and submit your online applications online. Recommendations letter can be email to them if you have it but it's not mandatory to submit one. At least you tried even if you get rejected.

I agree with ILim and blackberrymousse. You never know what an admissions committee is looking for so it's always a good idea to go for it.

And that quarter-life crisis, make it work for you in your personal statement. If you can convey whatever it was that made you switch to healthcare in an honest and passionate essay, that could go a long way.

I also say definitely apply!

I don't know if this helps but when I was applying for U Mass Amherst ABSN program, deadline was 1/15 and I mailed my application and recommendation letters (they only accepted paper application) on 1/12 and I was living in Europe temporarily and had to overnight it via DHL. They said just have it postmarked before deadline. Also requested transcripts on the same day. I seriously doubted my chances because of being so close to deadline and not having a great undergrad gpa (nowhere near your gpa!) but I still got accepted. Like Blackberrymousse said, you only have application fee to lose!

Most schools are kind of lenient about supporting materials like transcripts and LoRs because they know that is out of your control -- most will accept them after the deadline. Throughout my academic life, I've had lost transcripts, profs sending in LoRs late even though I gave them tons of time to write them plus constant reminders about deadlines, you name it it's probably happened to me. As long as you get your application submitted online before the stated deadline, I think you will be fine. Supporting materials can be sent later.

Blackberrymousse,

how funny we both got into umass amherst and waiting for nyu!

I really hope I hear good news from nyu soon because even though they are soooo much more expensive, I do live few blocks from them and moving all the way to MA away from my husband would be so difficult:'(

Yea, I really hope we hear back ASAP. I got accepted to Johns Hopkins and George Washington which need a response by April 14th. I just want to hear back from NYU and about financial aid package before making an official decision.

What's even funnier, shamadi, is that I applied for UMass Amherst at the very last minute too -- I found out pretty late about their ABSN program and decided I wanted to apply. To be perfectly honest, I'm very apprehensive about NYC (I'm a small town gal), but I've just heard so many good things about NYU's nursing programs. I am very worried about how much tuition and housing is going to cost.

I really hope you get in so you and your husband won't have to do long-distance. :)

ETA: Wow congrats, Frankie28, on being accepted to such amazing programs! No matter where you choose, I don't think you can go wrong!

Frankie28, very impressive! Congrats on you acceptances. Those are amazing schools

Blackberrymousse, I've heard good things about UMass Amherst program also and with their tuition being so affordable, it's a no brainer to go there if moving across the state wasn't such a big hassle.

I did some math to estimate NYU tuition- it came out to be about over 90k. I don't know if I made mistake in my calculation but they list price according to number of credits you take and that's what I came to which is nuts since UMass amherst is only around 35k! and with housing cost on top of that and everything else in the city being so expensive. But I am sure you you will find a way to love NYC. I personally love it but maybe because I prefer cities..

Best of luck to all of us!!!

Holy smokes, shamadi, is it really that much? For some reason, I thought tuition was only around 50,000, but I think I must've been naive/in denial. Being 90,000+ in the hole from nursing school and going into a career that averages nationwide about 60-65,000 sounds crazy. I don't know...it definitely gives me something to ponder. But NYU is definitely a reach school for me so it could very well be a moot point.

I know I couldn't believe it either. I still wonder if I did the math wrong but I googled and on some post from 2011 the price was only slightly lower than that. I will have to confirm with school to be sure. I applied to Pace ABSN also and I think their tuition is around 50-60k but they accept only 60-70 students so smaller chance of getting in..=(

Definitely makes me wonder is it worth being in so much debt to get a nursing degree..
