Hello everyone! I have submitted my application and my transcripts to NYU for the ABSN program beginning in fall 2013! I am very excited but surprised that we will be hearing so late about an admission decision. Is anyone else applying?
Hi Everyone!
I got an acceptance email this morning and could not be more relieved, but I'm also trying not to get too excited because I really need to wait on the financial aid component before I get in.
I may be totally wrong here, but I have a feeling I received my notice today was because I called yesterday to check on everything and to see if it was worth it for me to send in transcripts for the classes I have just finished (A&PI and Dev.Psych). I still had 4 pre-reqs to go when I applied so I wanted to see if that could have been the reason for the hold up. I was able to speak to my admissions counselor who seemed excited that I had finished a few of the classes I still needed and asked if I would send her something unofficial while I wait for the official transcripts so that she could try to expedite my decision. She mentioned that sometimes, when applicants have that many prereqs to go, they like to see how some of the grades pan out if possible. She also said that just because people had not heard, that did not mean there was only bad news left. She said that they recieved over 1000 applications this year and with the nursing program being what it is, they take time to go through each application to look at "the full picture" and of course that takes time. So for everyone still waiting, I completely understand your frustration but try not to get disheartened!!
As far as my credentials go: I graduated from Tulane in 2011 with a 3.5 GPA- majored in Art History, minored in Molecular Cell Biology (there is virtually no overlap between pre-med requirements, and nursing pre-reqs unfortunately, so I had 4 left). I have a 3.9 in my pre-reqs (got A's in both classes I just completed- which may have helped). I was hesitant about med school when i graduated and so I went to work for a non-profit in NYC to take time to fully consider my options. I focused on that in my essay. My recommendations were pretty strong- one from a family friend who has known me my whole life and who is a physician, and one from a co-worker at my current job, and I spent 2 years in college volunteering in an ER in a non-profit hospital in New Orleans- that made up the bulk of my essay because I talked about the differences in the type of care I witnessed between doctors and nurses.
I know how frustrating the wait is- believe me (you guys probably saw my annoying rants for which I'm sorry!!) But if there was one thing I could take away from my conversation yesterday and subsequent email today it's that you should not give up hope at all just because you haven't heard. If you get the urge, call admissions, see if there is anything more you can do- you never know what could come of it!
Good luck everyone!!
They didn't call me- I called them to verify that I should continue with sending updated transcripts. I called at about 1:30pm, and my admissions counselor told me to submit whatever unofficial transcripts I may have to try to get the ball rolling before the official ones arrived. She didn't give me a deadline, but I had the new information to her by around 2:30pm
I also got my acceptance today! Received the email at 9:05 and had a lovely surprise when I got off the subway at 9:30! Like blm88, I also called the admissions office yesterday and sent an email to an admissions counselor. I never heard back from the admissions counselor, but I'm convinced that my emailing them has something to do with hearing back today.
My stats: Currently working at the American Cancer Society. I graduated from UMass Amherst with a 3.33 and a liberal arts degree. I have around a 3.8 pre-req GPA. After I graduated from undergrad I was in the Peace Corps in South Africa for 2 years, which was when I decided to go into nursing. My time in SA was the topic of my personal statement.
I've been a monster this past month waiting to hear back from NYU, I feel bad for my friends and family having to put up with me! I applied in early February. I thoroughly believe the only reason they looked at my application when they did is because they realized I was going to start a harassment campaign until they notified me!
Best of luck to all of you!
Who are you guys calling at NYU? I just called the Nursing School's admissions to check in about my application because I need to figure out if I need to take summer classes and the girl was basically like "We have no idea, it'll be by the end of May." So it was not very helpful and I'm just wondering if there is someone better to talk to about my application! Any ideas would be helpful. I REALLY need to know soon or I might lose some of my tuition.
