Hello!
I recently got a job in the ED at a level 1 trauma center in the Bronx. It's part of NYC Health + Hospitals and there is a newly issued "NYC wide residency" in place. It isn't a year but it is 16 weeks. I start orientation this week and it seems there is a lot of confusion about how long we will actually be in the classroom for before heading to the unit.
Anyone have any experience with NYC Health + Hospitals orientation?

Hi can you let me know how the orientation ended up being set up?

How is your orientation going?
I also got a position in a NYC Health + Hospital ED in the bronx. I was told full classroom orientation would be 2 weeks and orientation would be 20 weeks, but it wasn't really explained further. She did say during the entirety of this I would only go up to ESI III, and once I get my TNCC I'd manage ESI 1 & II. Additionally, she said I'd be enrolled in the New grad residency program (which starts in January I think) which lasts for a year and ends with a capstone. It's a 1 month meeting for the year and the residency is combined with all the NYC Health + Hospitals where they bus you to the hospital that month's meeting is being held at. I start mid November, so I'd love some insight on this.

Which facility are you in? Lincoln, Jacobi and North Central are all in the Bronx. For us it was 3 weeks of class room and 5 days of system wide/hosp specific formal days. There were tests and skill competencies.
I'm on the unit now. For the first 2 weeks its 8h days and 2 weeks of 12h days then I go to shift (which is over night 12h for me). Total unit orientation for us is 14 weeks
We have to get all of our skills signed off before we can be released to shift.
There is a nurse residency program for all new grads/people with less than 1yr exp and its mandatory. They will bus you and it counts as a working day
Also yes we have to get the TNCC and BCLS/ACLS/PALS but I already have them
Thank you for the info! I'm in Lincoln and starting soon.
Did those that didn't have their PALS or TNCC have to get it prior to starting regular shifts/was on site training provided or can we get it later? Also how's it going in general? I don't have any nursing or ER experience outside of an ED/trauma preceptorship and wanted to know if you'd recommend reading up on anything.
I'm at Lincoln too. The TNCC you won't need until about 6months in, they don't recommend taking it earlier because it doesn't make sense without trauma nursing experience. The ACLS on site happens infrequently and there is no PALS on site. You can take it anywhere and the union will reimburse you.
If you had an ED/trauma preceptorship already then you're off to a good start, most of us had no experience at all. We get a lot of trauma here. But they will teach you like you're brand new. In orientation you'll learn all the skills and protocols you need for the ED. Then you get your ED preceptor.
I wouldn't say you need to read up because they will teach you the NYCHHC way, but you can always brush up on stroke because we are a primary stroke center and look over rhythms (but there is a class on both of those too)

Hi all,
Did you guys just apply to any job for NYC Health + Hospitals and then they require a residency? Or is it a specific job posting that says new grad residency? I have tried to find specific postings for new grads but have not found anything.
Thanks!

So the nurse residency is required for all nurses who have less than 3-5 years experience so regardless of the position you apply for you will automatically be enrolled in the nurse residency program. Also the union just signed the new contract so the HHC system is required to hire 1200 nurses to keep up with staffing ratios so apply broadly! At my hospital there are new grads in ED, peds Ed, NICU, MICU, and stepdown that we’re recently hired so it seems most positions are open to new grads.
tdlr; there are no new grad listings, just lots of them are open to new grads
What hospital do you work at? Any tips on applying ? I’ve applied every where and anywhere with no luck ?

I know this thread hasn't been active for some time but hopefully someone can help me out. When did you apply for your position? If you were a new grad nurse, did you apply while you were still finishing up your program? Or did you have to wait until you graduated and passed the NCLEX?
Thanks for your help!

Any advices on how to apply jobs here in NYC? I have been trying my luck at NY Health + hospitals. Applied all positions available but not a single phone call ? I do get offers to work in long term facilities but I’m not really interested.

I am interested in working in the ED and have been looking at NY Health + Hospitals careers website. When applying the only ED position has a requirement of "1+ year post-license ER experience". I was wondering if this was the position people applied for or if there was an ER position specifically for new graduates?
