Hey guys, what is the usual pay rate for a NYC RN? I have about 4 yrs experience and would like to compare the rates with San Francisco!
Stanford is paying around 50/hour and the housing seems to be about the same overly outrageous prices. I am curious how much the major large hospitals (I love teaching hospitals) are paying in Manhattan?
Thanks:)

Annual salaries are starting around $70,000 - $72,000 which maybe works out to about $38 an hour. At most places you get about $1,000 more for having a BSN and a few thousand more for night shift. (5,000 - 6,000 at some places)
If you work per diem you can make over $50 an hour I think.
And you get more for experience.
Lenox Hill posts their salaries online:

If you have 4 years experience, then you will get about $74,000/year. For a night shift, you will get $5,000 more. You got to have a BSN in order to get a job in a "rich & famous" hospital.
As a matter of fact, SF nurses get the most in all 50 states...So think twice if money is the most important factor.

Geesh, $70,000 doesn't seem like much for several years of experience and a BSN. I much rather work in Stanford...nicer place even though it's expensive as well.
I know many people think it's crazy to cough at $70,000. I know it's not chump change...I'm just thinking in terms of the duties of nurses and NYC..it is RIDICULOUS to live here.....stress, misery, etc. Ugh..I'm starting to wonder if I should just go for banking...everything is a no-go nowadays though ?
PS. I know people who graduated with Social Work degrees...they are sittin' on their butts making a solid 60k per year. I'd def. take the 10k pay cut to enjoy what I do..and have only about 1/4 of the stress.

Lenox Hill hospital is *not* closing down as of this moment, and I say this living not three city blocks from the place.
LH, like many other NYC hospitals is having it's share of financial problems, and has been looking to merge with another. Mount Sinai (about twenty or so blocks to the north), was one option, but as many of the physicans at LH also have admitting/OR there as well, that didn't exactly work out amoung other reasons.
Another merger talk was with NYU Langone, but that was called off as well.
Despite it's reputation as a hospital for the "wealthy", Lenox Hill provides care for all manner and sorts of persons living in the area. Heck coming home very late one night, saw a *VERY* pregnant woman and her husband getting off the subway (suitcase in hand), heading for LH. Now there's a thing; being in labour is bad enough, but imagine taking a NYC subway to reach your hospital! *LOL*
Anywho, Lenox Hill does suffer from the fact the Upper East Side of Manhattan does have several large hospitals from 57th Street to 105th street. Sloan Kettering, New York Hospital, Lenox Hill, Mount Sinai, Hospital for Special Surgery, amoung a few. Crowded as that list is, there were a few more, but they have long closed such as Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospital.

"Scrub Uniforms Provided By Hospital for Select Units"See LH still has it's floor nurses wearing whites *LOL*What always strikes me as a bit odd is that the housekeeping staff at LH voted several years ago to wear the exact same student nurse uniform my old NP wore. Indeed many schools still do put their students in this same uniform, some of them do clinical at LH. Go figure.

Not for nothing, considering the work load and stress level, 70K or so per year is not allot of money, especially for anyone living in NYC/NYS with it's high local taxes.
If you are lucky and bring home about 65K or so, figure about 21K goes for rent (average rent on a NYC studio apartment is about 1800 per month), then there are the other living expenses associated with living here.

Absolutely. I agree. It practically feels like BEANS to me. $70k in NYC is like $30k elsewhere..in my opinion. I know that that's not completely accurate..but living here, I can tell that's what it feels like. Most people strive to make 100k+ here @ the least.
