  1. What's a high end pulse ox?
  2. Thanks everybody! For sure I'll see what the other nurses on my unit use. All your input is greatly appreciated!
  3. Thank you! It feels pretty great!
  4. I know I don't have to bring my own. Just wanted an idea of what other nurses carry around. Thanks tho!
  5. Hey folks, I just passed my NCLEX and have a job lined up for February. I'll be working on surgical and orthopedic units at a nearby teaching hospital. Besides a stethoscope, scissors, tape, and pen, what gear should a med-surg nurse have available? Also, with holidays approaching, what nursing related gift do you wish someone would get for you? thanks!
  6. Do it! I'm a dude. I didn't think about OB before nursing school but had such a good experience in my OB rotation that I've considered it. The women I helped in L&D didn't mind me there and since I was useful and knew what I was doing they were glad and several thanked me for helping them. I think if you are confident and good at what you do patients will get past any initial bias and will be grateful for your help. If a few patients really don't want a male nurse so be it. But don't let that stop you from becoming an OB nurse!
  7. just replied to your pm!
  8. SHU's ABSN is going well. No regrets. Looking forward to wrapping this up in October!
  9. I took regular ethics and macroeconomics. Ethics at Middlesex Community College and Macroeconomics and Nutrition I took online at Thomas Edison State College.
  10. Dear Cayenne06 and Dinah77, I too am an acupuncturist about to become a nurse. While practicing acupuncture simultaneously as a nurse or nurse practitioner will not be practical in most settings, the science / evidence based approach of nursing should not negate the positive effect on patient outcomes that acupuncture can provide. Over the past eleven years, I have seen acupuncture reliably help patients undergoing chemotherapy to have less nausea, fatigue, and pain. I have helped patients recover from many with orthopedic injuries including disc herniations, radiculopathies, arthritis, and many types of tendinitis. For anxiety and panic disorders, I have helped many patients resolve their symptoms without meds. As a nurse and later as a nurse practitioner, I look forward to recommending acupuncture in situations when it could be helpful. It is no accident that acupuncture departments are more and more common in American hospitals including Memorial Sloan Kettering and many others. Here is an article about an analysis of nearly 18,000 patients in the Archives of Internal Medicine that shows acupuncture is indeed effective for pain. This story highlights a cancer center in Florida that uses acupuncture to among other things, reduce the risk of permanent neuropathies.
  11. I'm pretty sure there is no vaccine for Hep C and I don't recall seeing that on certified profile. Are you sure it asked for that?
  12. Both. I knew I'd have to retake it because I wasn't yet immune (before the Hep B vaccine). When I retook the test I asked for the lab results to be printed with reference ranges and they were able to provide them.
  13. I'm not sure. Even though my background check is done it says overdue because a school administrator is supposed to enter the date completed. I emailed the clinical clearance contact person at SHU about it yesterday but haven't heard anything back yet. I had my first Hep B Antibody rejected because the lab didn't include reference ranges. I think Certified Profile lists overdue items as Overdue and calls things Rejected if there is a problem with what was uploaded.
  14. Mo - just call the assistant director tomorrow as she should be back. The emails I was referring to and I think KSH was too were the SHU address emails via pirate net. You didn't miss anything important. Most everything I've gotten on my SHU email is either a university wide announcement (like changes to parking or that someone died) or if it is nursing related it pertains to the traditional BSN students. I don't think we're expected to take any real action on pirate net except registration until after the 7/8 meeting.
