Hello , Everyone I'm a third semester student at Northern Virginia Community College and I know this is a bit early to be inquiring about nursing school but I just would like to get a head start on getting to know everyone interested in applying! I'm excited for the upcoming semester! i have some ice breakers to get this conversation started as well. Has anyone taken the TEAS test yet and if so how was your experience? and also do you have any remaining classes to take before applying.

Good Luck to all those that got in ?

I only have one more shot to take the TEAS since they changed the requirements again. smh. To those that scored high can you share how or what you studied. Thanks for sharing your stats.

i have a 4.0 and got an 81 on the TEAS.

if you have taken bio 141 and or bio 142 i really recommend taking the time to read through any notes and highlighting or reading over powerpoints you might have saved! i took a lot of free teas test prep questions online and used the app Teas Mastery for everyday practice. i studied for about a month in a half ( although not consistently if im being honest,) i also used the Apex ATI Teas study book, i ordered it from amazon : https://www.amazon.com/TEAS-Test-Study-Guide-2018/dp/162845573X

hope this helps! and good luck to you in the future ?

Do you mind telling me about your background/experience? I also have a bachelors degree but in biology. I struggled with depression and anxiety for a while which completely wrecked my grades and dropped my gpa to a sad 2.2. I lost hope after that. I tried applying to the Nvcc nursing but didnt get accepted with 3.1 gpa and 78% overall Teas score. I have lost hope. i dont know what else to do. I feel like such a failure ?

Please don't lose hope! There is a lot you can still do. I too have a BS in Biology and didn't focus well during undergrad. I'm much older now and when taking the pre-req's for nursing changed my studying strategy, etc. I realized that I need to sit towards the front of the class and also take lots of notes. Also, I re-write my notes after class and do the study guides by hand writing, then type it up. This doesn't work for everyone, it's just something I learned that I have to do to help me remember things.

If you didn't get an A in BIO 141, can you retake and try for a better grade, and also retake the TEAS? My understanding is that they only look at the best grade you get. The ATI practice tests are very helpful.

Thank you for your kind words. I decided to retake bio 141 and also take micro. I am also planning on retaking the teas. I am going to try and to change my study habits, especially my time managment. Good luck to you. I wish you all the best. ?

Hi everyone! I am hoping to apply for the Fall 2019 cohort, as well. Just wanted to shed a little light- if you have a bachelors degree, you do not need to take the SDV course. Just in case someone didn't know, I would hate to see someone waste their time/money on the course! A little about me- I have a BA from GMU and my GPA was very low (2.4). I received a B in both A&P I and PSY 230. I also plan to apply to both GW and GMU nursing programs. Anyone else have a similar plan?

Hi, I also have a bachelors already and planning to apply for the spring 2020 cohort. I reached out to the mecounselor mailbox about needing the sdv course and haven't heard back yet. Where did you find out this info from. Did you get into the program?

Would it be wise to take it anyway since I assume it will be an easy A. And I have the second half of summer and fall to take some class? And i meed to be enrolled in at least one credit to have my transfer credits evaluated. I am expecting the rest of the prereqs will transfer from my bachelors.

I think you do need to take the SDV class because that one is specific to healthcare and I read on here someone was mark ineligible because they didn’t take it

I would take it online in the summer so you have the credit for application. It’s pretty easyIt’s pretty easy

I also took bio 142 and got a C. I am not sure if i should retake that as well. If i retake bio 141 my prereq gpa will be around 3.7 and my overall gpa will be around 3.2. If i retake bio 142 it will increase my overall gpa to 3.3. I am not sure if i should retake the class. what do you advise? Thanks

If you hold an A.S, B.S or B.A you do not need to take SDV classes, it is waived. I currently have an Associates degree prior to taking classes at NVCC. I asked this question prior to applying this year and was told I didnt need it from several MEC Counselors. I didnt get in this fall cohort however, it wasnt because of a missing SDV course. It was because of my TEAS score. So don't worry.

Im applying for Spring cohort 2020. Also if you have taken the TEAS twice already then you only have one more chance for Spring application cycle. I know it sucks. I went to MEC campus yesterday to confirm. Im hiring a tutor at this point. Good luck to others applying. Im going to make another thread on here for Spring 2020 if anyone wants to join.

When you take the TEAS exam can you use the computer calculator or is that not allowed? Thanks!

Yes, they have a basic function calculater installed on the computer that you can use during the test. It's present as a small icon on the right side of the screen which you can open and use anytime throughout the testing.
