Hey guys,
I started this thread in hopes of connecting with people who applied for the Traditional Nursing program at NVCC. I have been corresponding with them via e-mail and am anxiously awaiting an acceptance letter. Hope everyone else submitted their applications without issue! Maybe we can cheer each other on :)
Hope to hear form you all with questions, concerns and comments!

Hey HB291,
Congrats on getting in! :) I'm really excited too and I would definitely be interested in doing a study group. As for the books, I'm not sure. I've heard that you buy all the books you need for the entire program at the beginning of the first semester, so if that's true then it could be over a couple thousand?
UVA and George Washington do RN to MSN btw? I was actually looking into the one with Mason but they want you to work for two years first. It seemed like it'd be less time to just get your BSN first, immediately after the ADN then try for the MSN.
Does anyone if it's hard to find a job with just the RN? I know Inova is trying to phase it out and require a BSN for all their nurses.
Hey M,
I have read from previous nvcc blogs that the book bundle is around 900-not sure how much that has changed. George Washington has a guaranteed admission agreement with NVCC for those who have Bachelors degrees in a non nursing field. Here is the link to it:
https://www.nvcc.edu/depts/academic/transfer/GAA/GeorgeWashington-NUR-PR-GAA-2012-12.pdf
There are a few requirements including a 3.0 in both the nursing studies and cumulative gpa, as well as a bridge course to enter the masters program.
For UVA there is a RN-CNL (MSN) program (not in the guaranteed admission agreement- however, NVCC has one for a RN-BSN)
CNL for RNs, University of Virginia School of Nursing
I personally think that with a previous Bachelors, a Masters program is more time efficient. An RN-BSN program is usually around 30 credits, about a year. But if I could get a Masters afterward in 16 months (on the UVA site) full time, I would rather do that. Also depends on what kind of MSN degree you want to pursue. For GW NP programs, its about 48 credits full time which, at a nice pace is about 2 years long. GW allows you to apply to any of their Masters programs directly if you take a bridge course, have your RN license, and fulfill their gpa requirement of 3.0.
As far as finding a job with just an RN, I am looking for more information. A lot of previous students are saying it helps to be working as a tech and be affiliated with a hospital that might help pay for your Bachelors or Masters in the long run. There was one woman from a previous blog who graduated the program around 2011 and got a job as an RN1 at Fair Oaks-she signed an agreement that she would get her BSN within three years. That's a few years back, so I am not really sure what the job outlook is now. *Crossing fingers* that there are opportunities for us when we get out.
Hope that helps! :-)
Hey Everyone,I got my provisional letter of acceptance as well :-) Anyone have an idea of how much the book bundle is? I am very excited to finally start Nursing school! Lol very early but if anyone is interested in a study group- let me know. I plan on investing my sweat and energy into this program so I can do a guaranteed admission to a masters program at either George Washington or UVA. Congratulations to those who got in and cant wait to meet some of you at orientation!
Whoo! Congrats!! I am def. interested in the study group! I also am wanting to go onto the masters program at GW and it's great that its guaranteed admission so working hard will get us there for sure! Book wise I agree with MSouth92, I also heard that you buy all the books at once and I heard that one of them is like $500 the other's I'm unsure of but I believe they were around $200. I hope it's not over a couple thousand because that's insane! Especially if we still need to buy uniforms and the Liability Insurance as well. Anyone else nervous about the math test we have to take orientation day too? Don't know why but I'm a bit nervous lol I wonder if it's just basic math or something complex...
MSouth92: I have seen on indeed.com many job openings for RN's nothing specific as BSN but def just RN's and I thought Inova decided not to phase it out...oh gosh this is kind of stressful then....
I can't wait to meet all of you and begin our nursing journeys together! I'm interested in a study group too!
I also heard the books were about $1,000. There was a comment in the attachment to the provisional acceptance letter that said to bring our credit cards to the orientation to buy books- not looking forward to the cost. I plan on doing the guaranteed agreement with GWU. I have also heard getting a job as a tech while in nursing school can help later. I think anything CNA, medication aide, phlebotomy, emt, medical assistant related helps out.
