    Addressing Bullying in the ED

We will certainly never get anywhere when we have nurses that discount the whole concept like the above comments. I almost didn't make it through my new grad orientation because my preceptor was such a bully. She's one of those "I know it all, my way is the only way, new grads shouldn't be here, there's only one way to teach," nurses. Every question was a manipulation, every statement an attack. Said things in front of patients that were wholy inappropriate. Nitpicked every tiny little thing. My orientation was 6 weeks over the maximum expected (16 weeks is expected, I went to 22) because she refused to help me get there and pushed me back. I was finally pulled off and given a new preceptor. 3 weeks and I was on my own! My new preceptor even told my manager he had no idea what the previous was on about, that I was doing fantastic. All the time I spent with her and I can't attribute much to her except my still fighting to get my confidence back. Now she refuses to take report when she's my relief because "she knows it all." Patients say she bullies them all the time too. #hownottoprecept

Is it Ethical to Refuse to Treat a Patient due to Sexual Identity?

I'm not reading 123 comments to see if this was addressed in comments. It's not at the top of the article so it still needs addressing by way of correction and apology. Transvestites are not a part of this conversation. You meant trangendered. Which is not a sexual identity but a gender identity. Our language as nurses is important. We disrespect and dehumanize patients when using the wrong language.

    Dear preceptor

I had the same experience as a new grad. Yes a new grad needs more hand holding than an experienced nurse, but these attitudes and nitpicking are totally inappropriate and don't create an atmosphere of learning or trust. I had 3 preceptors, this one almost ran me out, and that takes a LOT from me. The first just wasn't a great preceptor for training a new nurse, the 3rd was amazing and in 3 weeks turned me from someone whose job was on the line because of #2s poor reports that by the end were a result of my complete inability to overcome the anxiety from her insanity to a functioning, independent nurse who was getting great reviews from my whole team. Funny, we have 2 experienced nurses and 3 new grads on the unit now and she hasn't been given a preceptee. In fact, not one preceptee, experienced or new grad, since me. She now refuses to take report when she's my relief. And I've found her digging through my charts on my patients that aren't hers, she doesn't do that with other charts.

    DC Endorsement from VA

I just accepted an offer in DC and I was looking at the endorsement application and they require the completion date of the background checks that VA did. But how the heck do I find that? I know it was on my account when my application in VA was pending, but not anymore.

I'm curious what exactly you're studying for? We didn't have anything to study. We just had to read the statement and sign the certificate. Are they giving you an exam this year?

Also, if someone hasn't, get a facebook page going. It's been a HUGE help for us. Some of us will be willing to join to help answer questions too.

I honestly can't remember what we needed a card for. If they do it the same way they did it for us: Primarily 90% of your books will be in a big boxed set, it will be at a several hundred $ discount and come with all the software you WILL need to complete assignments. Then there will be a couple extra books to purchase that are from a separate publisher. This will be all of your books for the program except maybe 1 or 2. The total cost was around $1350. For financial aid purchasers you will have to wait until 2 weeks before the term starts to purchase. Normally there is a $1000 limit per term and you have to pay out of pocket for the rest. Last year they allowed us to go up to $1200, so that may happen again, I don't know. You'll also need to purchase your uniforms and patches, pretty cheap at the bookstore. Name badges can be purchased at the bookstore or any number of retailers publicly. *all subject to change My total expenditure last summer to get started, with all the things needed to purchase was around $2100. Books, uniforms, shoes, background check, liability insurance, physical, lab supplies, nursing tools, things I'm sure I can't remember right now.

The study guide is good. If you can do that, you'll be fine.

Congrats everyone! You'll have to attend a MEC orientation, a Nursing orientation, and a library orientation. There may or may not be a textbook/resources orientation, not sure how they're handling that this year. Get ready to hit the ground running, you've got a lot to do this summer! The math test isn't a huge deal. Pay attention to the directions and check your work. If you don't pass it, you'll have to take NUR135 first semester too. We take a math test every semester, no getting away from it!

    Pharmacology Flashcards (drug cards)

I don't have an Apple computer, but what I would do (what I do to view Office docs on my iDevices) is from a PC I would digitally print them as PDFs, this will preserve the formatting from Word and hopefully your home printer will have no trouble with them.
