Nursing at University Medical Center

I am doing my clinical at UMC, i was over there in the last semester too. I dont know about you, but i cant work over there. Nothing specificaly wrong except UMC pay less but have nice benefits. On some floors 2 patients in one room. It is a clark county hospital, it is always full. I am not saying it s a bad hospital, just personal expierence. i also have my clinical at saint rose too, so i think may be i am just comparing these two hospitals.

Hey RegNur2008, how do you find st. rose? Which St. Rose are you at? I am thinking about applying there when I get to Vegas as well. Any info/tips would be greatly appreciated. I dont know if I should try full time or per diem to start with. Soooo confused. Anyway thanks in advance!

Hi,

i go to sienna campus, it is so nice, i am on peds floor. My classmates they had Med-surg and ob clinical and i heard good things about the hospital. I am really impressed by the staff and everyone. It is so different from UMC, i m going to graduate in dec 2008 and thinking to work there but at other campus.

The other campus of Saint Rose (San Martin) is near to my home, i was over there in dec 2007 as a patient in ER, i figured out and heared from others this campus is not really busy as compare to Sienna and it just opened few months ago.Sometime they got patient from Sienna when they ar ereally busy ovet there.

There is another campus (De Lima), the only thing i heared about that building is too old.

There is another nice hospital is Spring Valley which comes under valley health system.

Hi all. I'm not sure if this has been addressed in previous threads, and if so, I apologize for the redundancy. My husband and I are moving to the Las Vegas area in early fall. There is so much valuable information about the hospitals there (thanks for that!), and so I was wondering if anyone had insight into University Medical Center. Seems to be the only level 1 trauma center in the state! Any RN's there currently? I can't wait to move there, but there is always an element of "unknowing" when your moving to a new place. I appreciate any information, thanks everyone!!

I work at UMC, and I LOVE it. I went to nursing school here in Vegas and did my rotations at many of the hospitals here, I liked UMC the best. I am a new grad and it has been great. I love that UMC is a teaching hospital, there is always someone willing to teach you about something. I am in the Burn Care Unit now, and all the nurses have been super nice and helpful, and they all love UMC. I have yet to meet someone who does not like working here. We are also in the process of going Magnet, so that's pretty cool. If you are into Trauma, UMC is definitely the place you want to be. They get EVERYTHING!

I am not an employee, but I am a student nurse doing clinicals at UMC and I honestly love it. As far as the nurses there, I think they are great, very professional. I was on ortho/trauma floor and found it fascinating compared to others so I think as a previous poster said, the trauma aspect of UMC is amazing. Some of my classmates don't like the fast pace though, so I think to each his own when it comes to choosing a suitable place of employment.

Hi-the UMC sounds great to work at BUT too far from where I live-so I have been offered a ED position at Summerlin Hospital. Any thoughts out there about this facility. I been looking thru the posts and not too much is said-so looking for bits of wisdom. By the way-how is Centennial Hills coming along since it has opened? Hope to hear from some of you out there

I absolutely LOVE UMC. Yes, it is a county hospital and you are going to face all of those problems associated with a county hospital -- run down facilities, lack of technology, many uninsured patients, and you are busy busy.

However, the staff is amazing (for the most part), they really make you feel like you are part of a family. The benefits are AMAZING -- you will not find any other hospital in the area that can even come close to UMC's benefits. Yes, the pay is less (not by that much though). A friend of mine just started on a med/surg floor as a new grad in a different hospital making a little over $25/hour. You will make near that at UMC.

UMC is currently in the process of trying to become Magnet Accredited -- thus, they have many different committees trying to improve the hospital and improve nursing. They are trying to push toward evidence-based practice.

Most of the physicians are awesome and easy to work with.

dear colleague,

i work at valley in the er since we are close to downtown we see

everything--last week one of the etoh'rs in the hall actually pooped

into his urinal--we are also a stroke center and cpc center . at summerlin your patients are most likely to request perrier water rather than a urinal --in which to do their business--the docs that rotate to summerlin complain that we have the best flow. do you realize that summerlin, valley, centennial, spring valley and desert springs are sister hospitals??? consider valley --the other hospitals send their head bleeds and etc critcals to us, especially centennial--it's still learnig how to crawl walking will come later another bonus is that you will actually use your acls skills--sometimes three times a shift

Hi from UMC,

I am an RNC that works at UMC full time . I love working here. The staff is great, the patients are great. I have learned soo much in the time I have worked here. Yes it is busy, but are staffing ratios are the best in the city. The pay is slightly less, but we are the only hospital who gives a longevity bonus. I work a specialty so I am only speaking from that point of view. But the nurses on the med surg floors have been here for years and retention to me says that they are satisfied with their positions.

Oh by the way, I also work at St. Rose Siena. It is a beautiful hospital and has many things that UMC does not, as UMC has other things that St. Rose does not. I can honestly say that I enjoy both institutions and the staff. UMC is a county hospital and St Rose is a private hospital. All the experience I learned from UMC has come to prove to be an advantage in working at ST.Rose. Good luck and welcome to the desert. jan:nurse: :yeah:

I was there for a bit, on IMC. I chose not to stick around either. I think like you, I kept comparing it to St. Rose. BUT, I have to say that the dayshift and nightshift charge nurses on IMC circle were the greatest. Absolutely fabulous. The teamwork was awesome too. The staff was really nice. I have never worked with a nicer bunch of people. I'm not really sure why I left. I know that I did not like the 5:1 ratio. Their charting is on paper, which I did not dig at all, but I guess once you get accustomed to it, it's ok.

They are all nice facilities. DeLima is older, but still looks decent. Siena and San Martin are more aesthetically pleasing, but both are newer. They are easy to find, just Google them.
