Hi, In the hospital where I work, an infant can be at risk for hypoglycemia for other reasons than diabetes. here is a few why blood sugars are done: Weight > 8.8 lbs fetal distress in labor prolonged rupture of the membranes Group B strep positive Mom untreated in labor and/or treated in labor but infant showing signs of RDS Gestational age of 40 weeks Apgar scores less than or equal to 6 Prolonged 2nd stage of labor Maternal of fetal temperature at delivery I'm sure there are more but that is just a few :typing:nurse:
  4. :nurse:Hi all, Just was reading this thread and we just changed our protocol to be heel stick , for the "at risk newborn" ,to be done 1 hour after birth, 2 hrs after birth and 3 hours after birth. The glucose level resulted is to be 50 or higher. Yes, we have had parents refuse.

    Hi, We used to get 2.00 dollars an hour on call, and if they called us in we got time and one half. The hospital just raised our on call pay to 5.00 dollars an hour. the problem is the day is pretty well hang around and wait for the phone to ring.
