Nursing is Toxic Video

Despite the overly dramatic title, this is a very professionally presented video detailing the negative human dynamics of a new to the ICU orientee. This nurse really spells out the social realities of many nursing units. I think many of us have experienced feeling like outcasts, and how not fitting in or being accepted socially can undermine our success.

Hi, unfortunately, I experienced severe bullying by the unit secretary and other nurses when I worked in Med Surg. I was treated poorly especially when I asked questions. I was begging to be taught but ended up having to teach myself. I stayed on the Med Surg for two years but ended up leaving because the bullying got so bad. I left with low self-esteem and depression. Stupid me went back to the same hospital hoping the bullies would be gone especially since the hospital has a high nurse and manager turnover.  Most were gone but there was a new set of bullies.  I ended up having the same experience in the PCU. I was excited to be in the PCU because this is where I wanted to be since I graduated from RN school. Anyway, I thought I was lucky because my preceptor was an experienced nurse but she had a very heavy accent and I was struggling to understand her. I felt bad but I asked for another preceptor which I ended up getting. The new preceptor was amazing. However, for some reason, I was bullied badly by the other nurses and they even made up stuff about me and the manager chose to believe them over me since I was the newbie. Long story short, I left after 4 months because I knew they were going to fire me. Fast forward, it has been four years since I went back to nursing due to depression from my past work experience and the pandemic. I want to return to acute care nursing but I don't think what self-esteem I have left can handle more abuse. I love acute care nursing and don't see myself anywhere else. I am stuck and feel like my nursing career has been sabotaged thanks to nurse bullying.

I have experienced nurse bullying many times and in different ways . Furthermore, non unionized no protection . I've experienced only 3 good managers in 27 years of general medical in my trauma hospital . I would never be a nurse again if I had to do it all over again because of the politics . Even with lots of experience I get bullied with getting hard assignments while others sit around chatting and watching videos in their phones. I also get assigned with NA's that either have attitude or do not help . Im hanging in because I love my new manager she actually cares and is approachable and I like most of the nurses I work with (not all).  This is making me stay plus I need to pay my bills . But nursing is brutal man it's so toxic and now the patients have more rights than the nurses .

Honestly, the title of this video probably wouldn't have prompted me to view this video. But wow - so much good perspective in that video! I'm not in the ICU environment but this content is so applicable to any area of nursing.

I was a school nurse for 18 years. My lead nurse let me know during my first year there how much she had hated me. At that time, she didn't have enough authority to get rid of me.She tried several ways to convince me to leave. She removed my medication aide, she placed me in a substandard office.  She endeavored to lower my self-esteem and confidence at every turn. By the end, legislation had changed so she concentrated on finding enough fault with me to fire me. Because the union rep was education-based, he was useless to my struggles. My lead nurse even reported me to the nursing board. However, it's now four years later and I am finally vindicated. I loved my time as a school nurse and I long to go back to it.
