Nursing student and over weight

Published

I guess I'm feeling a bit alone and want to know that there are others like me.

It seems all the nursing students I go to school with are thin. I'm the only big girl, and I feel like everyone is looking at me.

Worse yet, we had to get fitted for scrubs, and I need a 2X. I had to say what size I needed in front of many of my fellow students. How embarrassing!

So, are there actually people like me who are going to nursing school too?

I was a 2X when I started 3 months ago and now I'm XL on top and nearly XL on bottom. I DO have hypothyroid but I also love to eat. I stopped eating off the taco truck and started packing my own lunch. Walking laps around the wards has build up my stamina

But I am perfect and complete just the way I am even if I never drop another ounce. I have people who love and care about me and really when compared to that does weight matter.

I do understand what you mean though as I used to always think "Oh he likes he better because she's skinnier than me" or "She got that award because she's skinnier than me" etc.

As you can see, you are not alone. It was lame you had to announce your size. But, it's done. Just forget it and move on. :coollook: You have lots of work to do!

hey dont worry, as long as u do ur job.......just be happy

Thanks everyone for responding!!

It really makes me feel better knowing that I'm not alone out there.

As far as my weight, I'm not ashamed of it, and I do find myself pretty damn sexy. lol

I would like to lose some weight because I know it would be healthier for me, but I don't see that happening anytime soon!! Too much sitting around reading, studying and being in class . . . and way to easy to just munch, munch along while I do it!

I'm not overweight (size 9/10) but I just want to tell the OP and anyone else who feels funny........dont worry! Like someone posted nurses come in all shapes and sizes, we are human. I had overweight teachers and clinical instructors and seen overweight nurses at clinical, and it was NEVER an issue.

I am also a XL student nurse. The WORST thing is when you have to get sized for scrubs. But, this day and age, somewhere, everywhere is someone who has a little extra "junk in the trunk!" So, dont let it bother you and don't let the other girls make you feel bad about yourself. They may be thinner than us but I am sure the have insecurities just like us!! Good luck with nursing!

Me too!!! I'm another one....although there are at least three of us in the class. You are soooo not alone hon!! Hang in there.

Im not sure where u live, but most of my class is thicker...I guess thats the norm in texas...so ur definitely NOT ALONE girl......

Trust me when i tell you, i'm overweight and i love who i am from within...ppl seem to overlook your size when you have confidence in who you are,and that goes for the thin, thick ,chuncky, and big gurls. I'm one of two nursing student in my class that is of size and i'm quick to jump in the bed for a bed bath or a four man lift, b/c in reality that's what type of pts you will have to deal with. so you are no alone.....i am here with you ....Lol. we will lose some weight once we get to clinicals. i workout three times a week and still don't lose i just want to maintain my cardio and strengthen my bones. i'm sure i will decrease in size as i progress but no sweat on what ppl think or how they look at me :nurse::argue::up:

I'm bigger than anyone who's posted so far to this thread (big enough that I won't even tell you, but suffice it to say, much bigger), and I was very nervous about skills lab when we first started, and there are lots of skinny girls in my class. But I got over it by taking the following attitude:

"Yo, girls, it may not be pretty, but you're going to see a LOT of this type of body when you're a nurse, so you better get used to it. Unless you're going into pediatrics, you won't have the luxury of doing draw sheet repositioning on someone who weighs less than 100 pounds. I *AM* the patient you're going to be dealing with, so start practicing now." Of course, I need to lose a lot of weight, and I'm aware of that. But in the meantime, they might as well get a dose of reality. I like to think that I'm contributing to their learning experience. :twocents:

Great attitude! I love it!:yeah:Thanks for saying it like it is.
