I don't agree with everything you've said, but that made me lol
Is it bad that I laughed too?? Not at the patient but more like a WOW.
Hmmmmm gadgets, let's see. I am on my iPad listening to my iPod with my laptop open and kindle next to me. Oh wait let me check the weather on my droid real quick. While my DVR is playing in the background. Yes I am a gadget addict. Thankfully I still like the patient too

a vent unit has is very involved in "gadgets". it takes a lot of special orientation to know what all the bells and whistles mean.

OK I was tired and cranky. I may have jumped to the wrong conclusion about the OPs question. Sorry.

Bah, don't worry about it... this wouldn't be as fun if there wasn't a bit of controversy. At least you didn't tell all the shriveled up old nurses that they should retire.

Thank you for coming back and addressing this. I guess if I'd had a student who was so enthralled by the toys that she missed the fact that the patient had died, I'd have a bit of a sore spot, too.

From EMT level on up I was always taught to treat the patient and not the machine. You can have artifact, faulty electronics, failing batteries, incorrect programing, and all kinds of other problems that overshadow the person lying in the bed if you aren't careful.
That said, there are some amazing machines out there that were science fiction a generation ago.
Thank goodness, a love for patients and an attraction to the toys that help keep them alive are not mutually exclusive.
