Yeah, we can't use laptops in 2 of our 3 classes this year either. We are all so pi$$ed!!! They are saying that students in the past were playing on FB, games, etc so they don't allow them. Whatever. Their reason for not using recorders is that they feel that we don't "participate" or listen when using recorders. :uhoh3: Again, Whatever.

A lot of us are "older" students and we feel like we are being treated like high school kids now. I can type way faster than I can write too!

I think the reasoning for laptop doesn't make sense. If they are on facebook instead of listening, that's their loss, ya know. The people using their laptop for class, that's their gain. I don't know why they care who is doing what; it will reflect come test time. It's not a teacher's responsibility to hold everybody's hand to make sure they get this or that done. Student's, I think, will have to learn if they were playing on the computer instead of listening then they won't do well. I don't understand why the professor would really care.

I'm going to check with my school about the recorder; I've never used one, just took notes, but a lot of people recommend one, so hopefully I can use that, or my laptop cause I too type way faster than I can write!

I agree with the laptop thing too, I think it hurts those that want to better studies (and find using a laptop helps them in that) and rewards those that don't care enough and spend their time texting or on FB on their iphones/itouches anyway. I had a tape recorder in A&P II and it really helped. Some of my prof's (non-nursing school) have been iffy about letting me use, but they kiddingly say I can use a TR as long as I don't you their words against them (they are human after all and can make mistakes). I just tell them no problem :)

Medications calculations book- know your conversions now. we have an exam every semester on med calc.

also tabers- can't live with out it. Davis drug guide,

nursing pocket guide

HTH :-)

Bingo - it's better to sharpen your med calc skills than trying to jump ahead with topic matter you may not understand without instructor guidance...besides, if your school is anything like mine, they assign some pre course reading before you even attend your first class. For us, it was from the first 6 chapters from our text book, Craven's 'The Fundamentals of Nursing' (also viewed online at 'The Point', provided you have a password code from the text you bought)...

Also, brush up on any A & P topic matters you thing you may be weak in...back when I was in A & P, they warned us that we'd be revisiting some of these topics later on and they're right - and it's not just as simple as knowing where certain organs/bones are. In fact we're just starting to touch on the electolytes chapter and yes, topics such as the renin-angiotensin mechanism, ions, cations, etc are coming back for a revisit:) The only thing I'll say is that in nursing, you probably won't hit into these topics quite as indepth as you did in A & P. However, there are terms you'll have be familiar with.

That's what I'll be doing the whole summer reviewing A&P ! and II, plus the math stuff. Luckly my orientation is at the end of April and we will get our book lists and what we will be required to read before classes start Aug 30.

P.S.- We never did the electrolyte chapter in A&P II :uhoh3:, more studying for me!!

so you all reccommend getting an NCLEX book before nursing school? and which Saunders book do you reccomend? What the difference between the comprehensive and the Q&A editions?

Hi guys, what kind of PDA do you recommend getting? Not having to lug around heavy reference books during clinicals sounds lovely! =)

Blackberry and iPhone were mentioned upthread, which one is easier to use for someone for knows nothing about either of them? If I do get reference programs uploaded onto them, how much will the phone/plan/etc. cost altogether per month?

I am completely stupid when it comes to electronics, and I have T-mobile, so the best and newest is what I went for, Blackberry Bold. I have not added the web yet, waiting til I need it, as it is $25 more a month ($50 is unlimited with T-mobile, so $75 month total with web). I use the calendar on a daily basis and it is easy, don't text much but have used it and it was easy to open/send. The keypad is qwerty, awesome, lots of symbols, quick too to get to that stuff. Camera is great with an easy menu to send/save/etc. Messages show up in 3 places, so that drove me crazy, knwoing I opened them all but it was still showing my little envelope, but I have figured it out since. The clock/alarm are great too. I have gone online just to see how it works and it was pretty fast, not immediate like my computer, but what I expected. Anyhow, I am not great with this kind of thing and so far this PDA is working well. My microbiology book also has MP3 downloads, they gave me a USB cable with my phone, and I can download all my chapter tutor sessions (using your email). I am dying to add the web but holding out at least til orientation; then I will probably not be able to hold out any longer, and that way I can download ePocrates and some of the other suggested programs and learn how to use them before school starts. But the Blackberry is very easy to use.

I know people love the iPhone, but I couldn't change carriers, so I had to go with this. If you have a choice, check out all your options. Google has the Nexus One as well, supposed to be really fast, but it is not will all carriers yet and I don't know much about it.

Wow, this was a very informative thread- thanks for asking OP! I'm learning quite a bit here :)
