I am potentially starting Nursing school Fall2010 (God willing) and was wondering what are essentials that you all have that you would reccomend to others?? Things for organization, or whatever...Thanks!! :)

RN2B,

Good luck with getting into nursing school, even thou it has been a few years I still remember waiting... oh it sure teaches you patience. The key is to start at the very begining orgainizing. Keeping notes and flashcards, lectures etc all together . Example all cardiology stuff in one folder. Use the folder also as a reference when you find a good article on the web or website that offers helpful hints on ekg strips or heart sounds write it down on the folder. I hope this helps. As far as books, the program will decide for you what they want you to have. Don't sell them either you never know when you might need them again. Master's degree anyone???

Someone on the board once recommended the uncalendar. I can't comment on its usefulness because I *just* bought it and it hasn't even shipped, but it looks like a very cool system for keeping organized.

I have a recorder for my ipod that I plan on using in class to record lectures. I also know I'll be getting a rolling case for my books, which I plan on having unbound and will probably 3-hole punch. I looked into having them rebound by chapter but that's crazy expensive on top of the cost of the books themselves.

GOOD SHOES. Spend a lot of time and be prepared to spend a lot of money on them. Just the amount of standing and walking I do at home has me ready to spend a couple hundred bucks on shoes if they're the ones that are the most comfy. I don't want to do it, but I will if I have to.

eta: I guess someone in this thread mentioned it, too. lol

you MUST have a couple of hours each week for YOURSELF...no study, no work, no nothing!! do something ENJOYABLE! your brain/body will need a break... seriously...!

A good stethoscope

A good penlight

Sharpie

Black pens

Watch with second hand

Comfy shoes

a little notebook for taking notes during clinical

For books I'd recommend RN notes (not really a book, but more if a pocket guide) and the Memory Notebook of nursing. It's filled with cute cartoons and mneumonics to help you memorize and study for tests,.

I actually just ordered the CD for all three volumes of Memory Notebook of Nursing where you can print all the images so basically its a hard copy of the books. Has anyone else used this?

Two of my must haves:

1. Patience

2. Sense of humor

They are both invaluable in NS!

Good luck! :)

So many good suggestions - I will be taking my first nursing course in either fall or January, and I can't wait. :D I'm in an ADN / RN program. Thanks for posting everyone!

So I just found out I was accepted!!! so im actually going to put all these tips to use!! Can anyone recommend some summer readings that you read before nursing school (that actually helped)?

Congratulations!!! I am still waiting, advisor said the letters go out mid April--going crazy waiting--and I really am hoping I hear before then since I've heard two different responses as to when they go out.

BTW, I did get a Blackberry Bold that another poster mentioned and absolutely love it--you can put so much in the calendar/planner. With two kids, work, and school I use it on a daily basis now, so I can't help but think I will really use it come August. Again, congratulations!!!

Thanks! I hope you get in your first choice school!

nursing school must haves:

recipe for success:

- a brain

- milion of neurons willing to work

- one ton of patience

- a huge piece of humbleness

- a touch of curiosity

- infused by humor

- with some grated willingness on top!!!

after all of that, all you need is a pen, paper, access to the internet and a drug/diagnosis book.

ah and for clinicals, pen, paper, stethoscope, and one of them little pocket organizers with shapie, highlighter, pen, scisors.

My favorites lately have been:

-good nursing school friends- you WILL find them- to vent about random clinical situations that your non-nursing friends will not understand or appreciate. You'll understand this later, trust me.

-your pain reliever of choice (I enjoy ibuprofen for its anti-inflammatory qualities) for when your feet/back hurt after clinical. Even with the comfy shoes, sometimes things just ache after being on the hard hospital floors all day.

-a corn bag to put in the microwave or freezer to apply heat or cold as necessary for various aches and pains :-) Sometimes, though, it's just comforting to have the heat. You can find them online, I'm sure, but I picked mine up at a local craft fair.

-Good hand lotion. You'll need this after washing your hands repeatedly throughout the day. I like Aveeno, no fragrance, the intensive hand formula.

-A great, can-do attitude to carry you through your program. Take this day by day. Best wishes and enjoy your experience!

great suggestions! keep them coming...

are there any comfortable roomy backpacks anyone can suggest? (possibly ones without weels :)
