Nursing school and a 3.47 GPA.Do I stand a chance?

Published

I entered college with a passion for Nursing. However,I got rejected 3 times with a 3.55 GPA! I lost interest, switched my major from Prenursing to Liberal arts.I graduated this year with my A.A and a GPA of 3.47.I was thinking of becoming a Teacher but I realized that I might just be settling.I like the Education field but I'll have more opportunities and probably a better life as a RN.I have a baby on the way so I need a flexable schedule and good pay.Don't get me wrong, there is still a part of me that wants to be a Nurse.I just forced myself to believe that I no longer liked Nursing.Perhaps a coping mechanism? LOL.Any advice?I live in New York.Do you know of any schools that will accept me with my GPA?

I went the expensive route and chose LIU. They accepted me as a nursing student last summer, even though I had no pre-reqs done, I was waived from taking gen-ed courses since I already have a degree, and their passing rate last year was 95.9%. I start the professional (nursing) phase in 2 weeks.

Thats great, congrats! Will I get waived since I have a A.A? What was your GPA when you applied? You were waived from the general ed.courses but what about the prereqs? What were they? When do you intend on finishing?

I had a 3.1 from my Bach degree when I applied, and I think you would get waived with an AA as well, but I'm not 100% sure. I still had to take the science pre-reqs, of course (I didn't need any of these classes for my 1st degree). I had 10 nursing pre-reqs that I needed to take (Bio, chem, etc), so I took 2 in the summer of 07, 4 in the fall of 07 and the last 4 in the spring of 08.

You need your Master's or maybe even a PHD to practice as Psychologist.Im not a Nurse but I can still become one.Social workers don't get paid well enough.Plus,I don't think it's my calling.Teaching is great but competiting against 10 other people for one Teaching position is not really motivating.Especially knowing that I have a baby to take care of.I want to be guaranteed a position after graduation.Do you know how many people have Degrees just hanging on their walls and not working in the field that they planned to work in?

That's all true. It's just that nursing is--difficult. Not that you aren't capable of becoming one and doing the job, but if you are not working as a nurse now, and you are surviving, perhapse you could do something else--anything else. I mean there's nothing worse than getting into a career that you don't like and then being unable to leave it because the hourly wage is too high to let it go. That's a special kind of slavery. Many doctors and lawyers are in that very same boat (slave ship, I should say).

I understand what you mean.Nursing is hard, but I've seen so many people become Nurses and they're GPA's are not as high as mine.I never said I didn't like Nursing, though.Im not as passionate about it as before, but I have always believed that Nursing is a great career.I cannot settle for just "anything else."I worked hard to be on the dean's list every semester(Well, almost every semester LOL).I want a reputable career.I want great pay and flexibitlity.I also like challenge.I want to like what I do.Pursuing a career that is in demand is the best thing for me right now.Life is very expensive .I want to be employed right after graduation or a short time after.I will have a baby to take care of.

nursing is hard, but i've seen so many people become nurses and they're gpa's are not as high as mine.

the higher the gpa does not mean the better the nurse or the easier the job of nursing is!

i think you should go for it, but recognize that no matter how difficult school is, the real world of nursing is much harder.

and i wish you the best, with work, school and the baby!

well, nothing is easy.i am up for the challenge.btw,we have the same name i think.lol

What school are you attending for Physical Therapy? What was your GPA when you applied? It is difficult but I know alot of people doing it.My former classmate was pregnant while attending Nursing school.Even after giving birth she continued on.My cousin is only 20 and she attends Molloy's Nursing program. Her daughter is 1 years old.I think I am just as strong and motivated.LOL

I'm attending a community college PTA program. It is a new program to the college this year. It is also merit-based admittance, but my pre-req GPA is a 4.0, and the competition isn't as stiff as nursing(yet), so I feel pretty confident.

The PTA degree is an AAS. I will eventually go on to get my B.S. in Human Physiology and apply to a PT program after that. Not sure where, yet! :specs:

i'm glad to hear that you're up to the challenge! i just want to stress, though, that you should want to be a nurse because you want to be a nurse, not because you think it is a good career move. the people in my nursing class who were in it for the job security/pay/whatever did not fare well in the end.

but if you truly want to be a nurse, then by all means! i just don't want you to make the same mistake that many people have made!

i wish you the best with everything, as i said before!

and, you know, there's only room for one jess in this here message board...

When I got into nursing school, it was based on my ACT score. They took the highest ACT's, then the remainder applicants were accepted based on grades. Maybe if you retook your ACT or SAT? If you went into nursing, you could eventually maybe teach nursing classes. Then you could have both worlds.

i have spoken with a few nurses.alot of them like their jobs, but many of them told me they did it b/c "thats where the money is" or b/c they had to take care of their children.i have also met students who couldnt get a job with the degree they had and switched over to nursing just because they wanted to live.they did very well.do you think everyone who studies nursing are really passionate about it? come on.lets be real.the students who did poorly in your class didnt do so b/c they didnt like nursing but b/c they just didn't try hard enough.so the passionate ones all passed?i doubt you're theory is reliable.btw, make that two :-p

I believe you can do it, want2beern, we are basically in the same boat. I have my bachelors in another major and I just decided to get a nursing degree. Its the gpa of the prereqs that count. I suggest you go to a community college. BMCC, CityTech, LaGuardia,Queensboro. All of these are very good schools that I know you can get into. I applied to BMCC and hopefully I will be starting in spring 09.

If your prereqs weren't good then retake them over and try very hard to get all A's. Just take one class at a time, don't rush it. Don't let anyone discourage you at all.

Another suggestion, u can try private schools also. It will be easier for you to get an associate than a bachelor in nursing. Then after you get your associate you can get the bachelor.
