Hello anybody that is taking this course starting 5/19/2014.
I read the previous, quite lengthy thread that has been generated about this course and am now scared to death! I hate working with a group and statistics was not a strong subject for me.
Perhaps we can begin a thread for the upcoming class and provide support for each other during the hard times, then laugh about it when it's over!
And for anyone that has recently taken Nursing Research 4325 online: Do I need my Statistics textbook? Is there a lot of statistics-based math or statistics concepts that I may need to refer to?

I hopefully will be joining you in this roller coaster of a class. I might be biting off more than I can chew cause I am also enrolled in vulnerable populations. Getting nervous but I am ready to get these classes out of the way. GPA might suffer but want to finish as soon as I can

Week 2 in Vulnerable is awful. Prepare to take time off/have PLENTY of free time that week (I'm talking like 50 hours of free time) for that week. Then it's better.
I doubled research and history II and I gave up sleep and gym time but made it work. True to form, research was my 4.0 killer as I got a B.
I had a decent group. 6 people - all were motivated but 2 did crap work that needed to be completely revised every week. By week 3 we started to give them "fluff" assignments so they felt helpful, by "we" I mean "I". I took control on day 1 and divided the assignments up, decided that rough drafts were due Thursday evening, critiques were due by Friday evening and final draft due Saturday.
Be prepared to spend all of Saturday revising work or waiting for assignments to come rolling in. This was inevitable.
Four people were great and the work they didn't required little or no fixing. Of those four, two others really took control as well. We totally bombed the JC assignment and that's why we got a B. Would have had an A otherwise.
Every Wednesday, I listened to the OOH, took very thorough notes. Then, I read the discussion board, then I listened to the videos for the week that addressed the assignment(a) and finally, I used the rubric. You will need to thoroughly review these areas in order to gain a full understanding of what is expected from each assignment - clearly, it would be far too easy to put all of this info in one, comprehensive spot. From there, I spent HOURS every Wednesday night taking the information I learned, breaking it up by individual question, and putting it in a thread for my group. The purpose of this was that each group member could go to the question (question 3A, for example) and see each and every requirement they should hit to satisfy the various requirements. This was also how I did my very in-depth critiques. I'm not someone who says "great job" - I left multiple page critiques for everyone. Having all of the requirements in one place made it easy to see what was missing. If someone's final sucked (like for the two people in my group), I didn't waste time waiting for them. I fixed it myself and added it to the final draft. Too many cooks in the kitchen will kill you so assign ONE person to control the final so different versions don't float around.
Upload assignments to the discussion board as well as the portal. The portal is the most important, so upload the way you would your own individual assignment. Again, YOU need to take control of this until you decide you ccan trust another group member.
If you have a bad group, and this happens, prepare to drink wine, and ultimately die.
You will have no choice but to single handedly do each assignment yourself. This will effectively alter your consciousness for life in a negative way and happens all too often.
If lucky, at least one other person won't be a compete idiot. Based on what I see in the discussion boards, I was just happy my group could string a coherent sentence together, but hitting ALL rubric criteria somehow manages to be a feat of great magnitude for many.
I have some helpful info for you guys that was passed on to me by semesters passed. They wanted to help others navigate this course; I want to do the same.
Let me know.
Wow Thank you for the information. Seems overwhelming!! I pray that I have a good group. I will start looking into taking the second week of the semester off. I have been reading the previous threads regarding research and have found very little positive remarks in regards to this class. Pray that the next five/ six weeks go as smooth as possible. I will def be stocking up on wine!! Thanks!!
Hahah yes, good idea!
I made it. It was ok. Just knowing where you can shave off more time in your week to focus on research will be helpful. I can honestly say I spent 20-25 hours a week on research...and that was with, what I would consider, a pretty good group overall.
If you give me your email I can send you some really helpful materials that were sent to me.
Thanks sending you message
