Nursing phrases

Hi,

I am looking for phrases nurses commonly use with patients, e.g., "I am going to take your bollod pressure now," "This will hurt a little," "Please hold still," "Who is your next of kin," and "The doctor will see you now / shortly."

Thanks

"Are you in any pain?", "When was your last BM?", "The doctor says you shouldn't (insert task).", "Do you want cream and sugar with your coffee?"

How would you rate your pain? 0 being no pain and 10 being the worst pain you have ever felt

Is there anything else I can get you?

Do you have any allergies to medication? Latex? Shellfish?

You'll feel a poke now.

Hi my name is _____, I'll be your nurse today.

Take a deep breath.

Did you have a bowel movement today.

Any pain or burning when you urinate.

(Any type of positive theraputic communication technique)

How does that make you feel?

So you say your ...........

I see.

:)

"Not necessarily."

As in "Is first-trimester bleeding a cause of concern?" "Should I be worried about my daughter's high fever?" I totally get where it's coming from--especially the more I learn in school, but, yikes, it doesn't always sound as reassuring to the patient as it may to the nurse! :chuckle

I'll be with you as soon as I can.

Here's your nurse's call button.

When you reinsert the oxygen cannula, the prongs must be pointing down and not up.

Visiting hours are over at 8:00 p.m.

Are you using your incentive spirometer?

You put what? Where?

Here have a sip of water.

Please use your call bell.

Please don't pick at your dressing.

Because the doctor said so...

Sorry to spoil the party, but visiting hours are over.

I'm sorry, no overnight visitors allowed.

If you do that again, I'll have to restrain you.

Have many, many more.........

"Get 'er done!"

Sorry, that is a STUDENT nurse phrase. =)

"You're doing great"

"NO-NO-NO-NO-NO! Wait for me!!!!"

Have you or anyone in your family been exposed to TB, WC or CP?

I'm guessing you are trying to pick up phrases in foreign languages that would be useful?

Where is the pain?

What medications do you take?

Do you have history of health problems?

Do you understand privacy laws?

Do you give consent to _______ procedure?

When was your last period?

What's your birthday?

Can you pee in a cup?

Can you move {affected part of body}?

Those are some of the most commonly asked questions at my job.

I never heard of bollod pressure??? What is that??

"Do you have an advanced directive?"

"Are you passing gas yet?"

"When did you feed/change your baby last?"

"I don't know if your insurance will cover your trip to the ER."

"I can't guarantee the MD on call will refill your prescription for______(usually a narcotic), since he doesn't know you or your health history." This is usually on calls made to the call center I work at on the weekends. Funny how everyone runs out of pain pills when their MD isn't on call!
