Externship or take the summer off?
I am not doing one. My daughter is going to kinder next year and this will be the only summer I will ever have to spend with her. She has been in full time daycare since she was 6 weeks old and I am finally in a position where I can financially afford to stay home. I talked to some of my instructors about it and they said that most of the time the students that do the internships do it to get their face known at the hospitals and they are more likely to be hired in those places.. For example ICU wont normally hire new grads but they just hired one of the girls that did the internship over the summer.. I won't be here since my hubby is in the military and gets transferred after grad.. They also said that I will get PLENTY of experience after graduation and that I should just enjoy my time off.. With that said, even if I didn't have kids, I would only do one if I got the area I wanted. I don't know how long you have been in the workforce but I would want to take my last summer off because you will never get one again.

ADN vs BSN My daughter and I having a heated Discussion!
I thought you were a nurse... My bad. I must be confused. You mentioned that I have resourse you dont which is my husband.. well you have a resource I don't have which is a job. My husband is our only income and he in the military so it isn't like we are rolling in the dough or anything.. Not meant to be a pissing contest but I wanted to emphasize we all have our unique challenges. Me thinks you only want people to agree with you. You sound like any opinion given to you that opposes yours is unwelcome so whatever. If I were your daughter I would trot my happy self down to San Antonio and go to UT Health Science Center and get my BSN. I would take out loans and live on my own. School and the Cost of living is fairly low in San Antonio. I lived there for 5 years. Another bit of advice although I doubt you will take it.. Don't get so caught up in "teaching lessons." You seem to keep posting how you want her to learn this lesson or the value of this or that.. Just be a parent and take it day by day. If you get caught up in teaching lessons, I garauntee you are going to LOSE her. I am sure she is not interested in life's lessons at 17 years old.. I certainly wasnt...

ADN vs BSN My daughter and I having a heated Discussion!
I guess my question is, why would you not want your daughter to get the whole college experience? And more importantly, why would discourage her from getting her bachelors?? I want my kids to aim for the highest available. I want them to go further than me which means if I get a masters I want them to get a Phd if they so desire. Even if it costs ME money (which it will and does since I have college funds for them) I guess i just want my kids to have it better than I have or had. Neither my hubby nor I had the whole dorm thing in college and we definitely want our kids to have that experience if they want it. Why not? You are only young once.. even if that means I will have to miss my kids terribly when they go out of state I will encourage them to do what they want.

Why are you REALLY going into nursing? Honest answers please.
I wanted to be a social worker like my mom but my husband (who has a business degree lol) figured it would not be cost effective for me to abandon my 40+k a year job in IT to go to school for 7 years to make 15 bucks an hour. Science is easy to me and I compromised with nursing. I found I am making the right decision. If it is anything like school, I know I will love it. I hate hearing about burnout. Hello.. I wanted to be a social worker.. lol. So, money was factor -definately. Job security is a factor. I have this need to help people.. that was a factor. I am sure there are those who are only in it for the love of it. Maybe they will donate their services to volunteering at shelters, planned parenthood, rural clinics. etc... If money is not an issue I am sure they can do a world of good making little money but doing what they love.. I hope to volunteer SOME of my time once I finish school but for the most part, I want to make $$$$. Ps.. My husband makes pretty good money. I don't have to work. But you know.. Call us greedy but we LIKE two incomes.

Crying, Cursing in Class and other Drama
We have at least one person a week cry from some form of stress or another. I admit I even let the stress get to me one day and cried on clinical. I tried so hard to hold it back but the tears just started the flowing. I was having a bad week in my personal life and I was running on about 4 hours sleep. I am an A student and no I am not one who cries over tests. What I am trying to say is that I am not a slacker. I am a wife and mom. I have lots of resposibilities and my body responded to the stress that day by crying. My point is that our instructors are very kind and loving people. When one of the student's is at the point of tears, the instructors offer a big hug and sit them down and find out what the problem is and do everything in their power to lead them in the right direction to fix it.. or even just listening does a world of good. Of course it doesn't surprise me since they are NURSES. That is what they are training US to do. Isn't that what you guys learn in school? I'm appalled that a bunch of nursing students are being so judgemental. We are supposed to be compassionate. We are not rocks that go on the clinical floor and never let it get to us. Even seasoned nurses sometimes go home and break down and have a good cry. You should never lose your emotions and become a rock. However, it does become easier to control the tears. But someone who gets annoyed because someone cried over stress is not someone I want as my nurse...

Am I the ONLY person who had trouble just making a bed to nursing standards?
Heh heh.. this thread made me laugh. I was in the military. I always passed my inspections for my bed in basic training.. but for some reason I am soooo awkward making a bed for clinicals!! I hate it!
