Best brand for scrubs/uniforms?
Koi is nice when they scrubs are more cotton than polyester. Iguana is nice, but I am not in love w/ the fitt, but I can buy them 100% cotton. I've been wearing Urban scrub pants for (3) years-day in day out. They work for my purposes and look nice too. They are now owned by Landau. I like Landau too, but watch the dye lots! I just bought a Landau student dress, but have not had an occasion to wear it yet:(

ADN vs BSN My daughter and I having a heated Discussion!
My daughter will be graduated from a BSN program July 2009. She is now happy that I encouraged her to go to nursing school. We have had and still are having interesting talks and bonding along her journey of nursing. We just reviewed together for a psych nursing test. I can't tell you the joy this brings me to quiz her, offer real life experience, and then see her make excellent marks on the test. She still wants to be a doctor and I am encouraging her pursuit of this. She took the MCAT this summer and did well. She plans to take a year off from school and work as a nurse during this year.

ER nurses...what shoes??
I like the classic black tie up Doc Marteens. They have Goodyear rubber well treaded soles. They are particulary good for wide feet and high insteps. When the cleaning staff says: "Careful, I just washed the floor!" I smile and keep walking. These shoes are really safe!

R there any more New grad orientation positions out there in DFW area?
Thank You WikkedCat for advising me to call the managers! This is something that I did not remember to do in my bout of anxiety. I am really hopeful about getting a job closer to home, than the last one was, at this point. I did get a call from a hospital yesterday. The call really helped to reassure my confidence in the process that nursing school = gainful employment. Yesterday was really rough b/c it was the 1st day that I did not report to work on a Thursday. All of the times that I juggled nursing school and work and looked forward to the day when I would not have to juggle both is finally here, and now I have no job! I am taking this time to focus on weight loss and studying for the NCLEX. I refuse to let this unfortunate, uncontrollable wrong destroy me and my self-confidence. Now is the time that I have to dig in deeper. :pumpiron:

R there any more New grad orientation positions out there in DFW area?
Thank you for this really sound advice! I went to my alternate (2) hospitals and asked for the skinny on how many grad nurse positions might still remain and the one hospital was honest and told me that there was nothing left, but would pass my name along. The other hospital nurse manager told me that she was not at liberty to say whether or not there were any grad nurse positions avail until I went thru the "formal" application procedure w/ HR. Needless to say I scribbled down the "formal" information very quickly. I am getting over the pain of the incident as the hours pass and realize the need to pursue other possible options quickly-just as you have advised me. Another hospital called back and said that they have (1) position remaining. I am filling out the necessary info online for that one now. By the way I called another nurse recruit that visited our school earlier and she was honest up front. She said that she did not have anything left. Thank you for offering some quality advice!

R there any more New grad orientation positions out there in DFW area?
I had an experience w/ this hospital before on changing positions and the "person" who commits up front is the nurse recruiter and the unit manager and then they turn it over to HR who makes "the formal" offer. Neither of the front end people make the front end offer. The HR person scribbles down lots of facts and figures and gets the applicant really excited, if you let them control your emotions that far, and then HR calls the individual on the phone and makes "the formal offer". I had no reason to believe that they would not carry thru after I met w/ the unit manager and she agreed to create this position for me. There was really nothing that I could have done short of being really rude and pushy w/ the HR person and the unit manager.

Ultrasound Technician - Career path ??
Speaking as a former u/s tech and a new grad nurse-Hospitals hire more nurses than u/s techs. U/s is fine if you do not need to be able to move around and find the exact right fit for a position, but the opportunities to find the right fit are so much more limited than they are for nurses. How do u/s sign on bonuses compare? There are many more divisions of nursing-emergency, tele, med surg, school, dr's office to mention a few. U/s was a very disappointing profession for me. When we graduated there were no jobs. The hospitals hand picked from the program who they wanted to hire and in spite of my graduating w/ high honors in 1989 they did not pick me or my girlfriend. I went to Virginia to work and soon found out why the position was sitting empty. And my girlfriend eventually got a job out in middle PA where she stayed in forever b/c she could not move elsewhere. She said that she liked it, but I lost touch w/ her. It is a good thing that she did like it b/c she was not able to make a career move. The field was extremelly limited. Run to nursing school and pass up u/s school imho.

R there any more New grad orientation positions out there in DFW area?
I was tricked! I was committed to my hospital. On May 15th and after having worked at this hospital for (1) year, I called HR to ask them when I needed to bring in my new graduate information so that I could get my pay raise I was told that the graduate nursing position that had been offered to me "did not exist" even though the nurse manager told me face to face that she could take a pt position and another pt position and put them together and create this position for me and that the ft position would "be no problem"? I did not search any other hospitals because I was confident of this offer. :angryfire I am now scrambling to find a new grad intership and of course they are all full now. I was told by one up front recruiter that most of the internships will begin on June 5th. What is the best thing for me to do now?

How can the hospital stay profitable?
Last night we had a pt delivered to the ED by the local police dept. THIS IS HIS 20TH TIME COMING IN. He gets the works, and of course he is SELF PAY. Well to make a long story short: He is admitted b/c his ammonia level is too high, been smoking crack. He is combative, loud, uncooperative, and flailing about. I suspect he is mentally retarded as well. It took (8) nurses to hold him down to get blood drawn. The charge nurse was attempting to start a 2cnd line on him? I am a nursing student. One of the doctors went to the charge nurse and told her this man is constantly tying up our manpower. Eight nurses spent at least (1) hr trying to hold him down for the second line which never happened. I kept saying he has ropes for veins in his hands, let's just go there and get the blood that we did not already get. I got tired of saying this. Finally this is exactly what happened. This man typically comes down off his high in the morning and leaves AMA. I talked to the the police sargeant and asked him can't they make this man a ward of the state? He told me they did not have grounds to "app" him. Is there no where that BEAURACRACY does not get in the way of good ole' common sense?

Desperately Need Help With Care Plans
We have to do a list of nursing ques. I hated doing this 1st semester b/c it seemed ridiculous. I just turned it into a game/challenge. I try to get as many ques as I possibly can as I go thru my head to toe assessment. As I go thru each body system I them come up with some idea of the ndx. I tend to work it backwards ie starting w/ the ndx, then substantiating it w/ the ques. I found an excellent website. It is orthodox.net and it take you thru all the body systems and then at the end of each body system it ques you for a ndx. The subjective info that I garner in the into is also very helpful. This is what Stephanie in Fl is writing about. I always ask the pt. "Why are you here? They are always happy to elucidate and catch me up. Then I go to elsevier and/or Ackley's book and formulate a goal.

I need help w/ (3) case studies
Our teacher kinda went w/ our guesses of pneumonia, drug abuse, and cellulitis and the nursing interventions that we provided. One guy has been an ER tech for a long-time so he was able to provide the most meaningful info from our group.

ADN vs BSN My daughter and I having a heated Discussion!
Yes, my sentiments exactly! I decided just to drift off this segment b/c now the "edu-speakers" have gotten involved. I truely felt that this topic was closed w/ the (4) year scholarship? And when I said that whatever she does will be her decision. What part of "her decision" are some readers not gettin"? She is not even sure at this point she will pursue nursing, and we still have folks responding to her choice to follow the BSN vs ADN program? At this point I wish this was the issue at hand. Now my brother's "engineering" ideas pervase. It'll be interesting to see how this all turns out, but in the meantime I have a lot of cardiac drugs to study. Thanks RninMay2005 for stickin' up for us ADN students. A lot of the decision to go to ADN+1 vs BSN rests in the money, and a student's tolerance for non-stop school, and a willingness to append one's self out of the work-world for (4)years. The funniest thing is that some people did not even interpret the "ADN+1" part of my statement. Some people just jumped to the conclusion that I wanted my daughters education to terminate after the (2) yr ADN program, that is really (3) years. I said that I wanted her to take a "Plus 1" approach to this. If nothing else this segment has taught me to listen to the patient. As for me you will find me cruising other links where I can get some practical knowledge. The scholarship created a whole different scenario. The cost of tuition is now removed.

ADN vs BSN My daughter and I having a heated Discussion!
Yes, that was the real crux of the matter. I do remember those days. Well now she has a (4) yr scholarship so she can do whatever she wants to do. I am not going to encourage her to do something that she does not want to do. My brother is currently advising her to go into engineering??? I told her that I refuse to play "tug of war". This escalated into my brother promoting engineering, and my promoting nursing. I told her "this is my stop, this is where I get off"! All of her college credits thus far are the pre-requisites for nursing. She tells me that she now feels like she has wasted her time b/c she wants to be a medical doctor. Yes, I have told her that this requires at least (8) years of non-stop study. Yes, I told her that she can not do anything w/ a neuroscience degree. She will not be trained to work in the work-world w/ a neuroscience degree, and what if she has to/or choses to exit education at the bs neuroscience level, or before??? I am just going to focus on my studies, and I'll be here if she needs me.
