I need some help making a decision... I am 30yrs. old and recently let go from a fast paced executive career due to a corporate buy out. For years I have wondered if I would make a good nurse, but have never taken the steps toward it because I was happy with my job and making good money. I now have the chance to go back to school and I am considering nursing school, but anytime my family or friends think of me as a nurse they laugh (outloud and very hard). How do I know if I have what it takes? Do my friends know me better than I know myself? I really think I want to do this, but I don't want to get half way through and realize that I am a huge whimp or that I don't have the stomach for it. Where can I go to find out about what life is really like as a nurse? Can anyone tell me the real life challenges of being a nurse? I don't want to get my info. from "ER".
Everyone worth their salt has, at one time or another, wondered if they did the right thing. We have all gone home sick to our stomach about something that happened or that we had to endure. We have all had wonderful days and bad days. Nursing is like the manic-depression of jobs. If you can take it, do it.
Aren't we all confused when it comes to changing careers? My husband worked at "Waffle House" as a cook for 12 years, he also had a second job as an orderly at a local hospital. When he decided to go to nursing school, people laughed and said "Can't do a man's job?" or "What makes you think a cook can be a nurse?"
Well I am proud to say, my man has now been a nurse for over 7 years, does an excellent job and loves his work.
Do your own thing hon! Like they say, follow your heart.
Also, if you can't shadow, work as a CNA or Ward Clerk. Anything to get you close as possible to the health field. Just to try it out.
WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A NURSE, COMPASSION FOR PEOPLE-A DESIRE TO HELP-A STRONG WORK ETHIC , BEING VERY ORGANIZED AND A SENSE OF HUMOR HELPS. NURSING IS A WONDERFUL PROFESSION AND IF YOU'RE CONSIDERING IT THEN YOU SHOULD THINK ABOUT WHAT TYPE OF NURSING YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO. NURSING IS VERY DIVERSE, IF YOU CAN NARROW THE FIELD THEN MAYBE CONTACT A HOSPITAL TO SHADOW A NURSE OR MAYBE WORK IN THE AREA YOU ARE CONSIDERING AS AN AIDE
OR A UNIT TECH TO SEE WHAT THE NURSES DO. THAT MAY GIVE
YOU MORE OF A SENSE IF NURSING IS FOR YOU.DON'T LET ANYONE ELSE MAKE YOUR DECISION FOR YOU. I WAS A JUNIOR IN COLLEGE IN BUSINESS ADM. I CHANGED TO NURSING-IT'S BEEN 15 YEARS NOW AND I WOULDN'T TRADE A DAY OF IT-NURSES HELP PEOPLE,WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
There are several career courses at most colleges. Take some time and discover you anew. Personality tests can help point you in the right directions. Nursing does require a specific persoanlity, or at least a propensity to care for and show compasion for sick PT's, in a professional way.
I like the Myers-Briggs test. Many of these persoanlity tests are on the computer, and they are good. Best of luck to you!

Nursing is a 2nd career for me.....I, too had doubts. But I have now been doing this for 5 years and am very happy w/nursing. I got into the area of my choice (maternal/newborn) and love it. I agree w/the simple post most:
Follow your heart.
Succinct but well-applied to any area of your life, including one's career.
