Another nurse bites the dust due to facebook

Nurses Headlines

Published

I don't know the woman in question, yet news reports acknowledge that facebook has caused another job termination casualty in the nursing community. I know there are numerous posts regarding this topic, yet I figure sharing this may help someone think twice when placing job/career related postings on facebook no matter how private you think your posts are!Follow the link to see why. What would you do?

Jobs take it too far sometimes imo...

My friend was working in Pier One Imports and she was written up because she wrote, "I don't want to go to work today!" on her twitter. That's retarded. Everyone is entitled to their privacy and personal lives.

Of course they are. Until they voluntarily forfeit their privacy by posting on a public domain.

p.s. You might want to rethink your use of the word "retarded" as a derogatory term in the future.

I do not participate on FB, Twitter, etc. Too much risk involved, IMO.

The risk is minimal as long as you remember that nothing you post is private and that everything you say/post can potentially come back to harm you. As in any conversation which has the potential to become public guard your words.

Facebook Facebook, the new daily newspaper where you can read for free anything you want including personal info, job descriptions, crying out for help etc....I used to have facebook but did not say much about my life, I only had people that I knew on my friends list.I don't have facebook anymore...if people want to talk to me they can call me, that's why I pay over $100.

Just curious,...if the newspapers and media had already released the mans name and that he was seen at xyz hospital,..is that info still protected?

I agree that no matter who the pt is or what the situation, I can't talk about it to anyone, much less post info on the internet, but it seems like she didn't really divulge any info that wasn't already public knowledge.

It isn't like she gave out his address, where you could find his home or family and oh by the way the creep was HIV positive! I'll have to read up on my HIPAA guidelines.

Sad situation,...perhaps a lesson to us all.

I use facebook to keep up with my kids (grown). I don't believe I'd post any privileged information, but unfortunately I have to agree that this lady went the one step too far.

I worry about the forums here. After thousands of posts I've never run into anyone I know, at least I don't believe I have. You have to be so very careful in what you say, write, read etc.

I worry about some people here too. I have read many posts that describe a situation at work, or med errors in details which makes it easy for managers, supervisors, co-workers to guess who they are. There are so many nurses on this site and you do not know who is and who isn't reading this posts.

I am sure these employees can go back and remove the info, but a friend of mine has already copied all of the photos and names.....so, that info is "out there" and can never be completely erased.
Of course, many webpages are cached so that even if the info is removed from the currently displayed page, the cached page may be available forever and there's nothing you can do about it.

Although my privacy setting are secure, and I'm smart enough to not violate the standards, we just received an e-mail that our facebook accounts are being reviewed.

I can argue privacy all I want, but I signed a policy that stated I will not in anyway through the news or internet media defame or begrudge my employer, along with a strict HIPA disclosure as to such. So it was made known to me, well in advance I could not say to those locally...."I have stared into the eyes of a cop killer" or what ever she posted and then say deragatory remarks.

This person, whom we may despise, and we know we care for equally... is no longer cared for equal in public perception. Go in with an STD now... HIV.... illegal... it undermines the fact that we really do a great job, but still have feelings of wanting to do otherwise.

The public is not that smart to understand we are human with falliable thoughts, of which we are professional enough to do the job. Everyone is trying to lawyer up, make a quick buck at our expense, which is our employers expense and our inner thoughts are best kept here, under very discrete disguise. Because they are monitoring here too. The public is stupid an ill informed, and we can't fix that, but must protect ourselves from it.

Can't fix stupid.

Thank God for Facebook, Myspace, and every other social network website for giving employers the tools to weed out the weak.

Blatant HIPPA violation. Period. She should have known better.

People have gotten terminated by just looking up patients on the computer while they were at work...granted they had nothing to do with those patients' care. This was a violation of HIPAA, plain and simple. :twocents:

Facebook.... bad news. FB is constantly violating users' privacy by changing the settings, etc. I would have never joined but for a sister-in-law (note how they don't let you read anyone's posts without joining, unlike forums such as this one). After a short time, I stopped posting. I just check on it occasionally to make sure the privacy settings are as secure as possible.

FB is not only a waste of time, but obviously very risky. A (real) friend of mine added her employer (also mine!) as a friend.... now I have to be extra sure that my settings are "friends only"... but they can still read what she posts to me! (Since I don't respond, that's very rare.) When people have 100's of "friends", how do you even know if they have added your common employer as a "friend" (LOL)?!

My advice re. Facebook: just don't use it.
