I was just wondering how many of us became nurses (or decided not to!) because they had family members who were nurses, and how this might have affected your outlook or enthusiasm for nursing. Anyone? My mother was a nurse and made me swear every day that she came home from a horrible night shift on the SCU that I would NEVER be a nurse. Sorry, mom! Her sister is a nurse, and so are two of my cousins. It seems to run in the family!
sister and bil are both psych. nurses, mil was a nurse (she has stories to tell!! She started training in 1946, in postwar Austria!)
my aunt in Chicago is a nurse too and at least one, but I think even 2 of my nieces in Australia are nurses too.
Plus we have a few dr. med. in the family too.
In my side of the family, I am the only one who is anywhere near the healthcare field except for my sis who is an admissions clerk.
On my husband's side besides me is his sister, she is an RN. Another SIL is a home health aide. My 13 y/o talks about becoming a paramedic but that is a few years down the road....if he goes through with it.
My mom is, two on my dad's side and four others on mom's side. I think some families are just service oriented, meaning adding to the nurses, my family consists of mainly teachers, police officers, and military members. With a doctor and a couple of pharmacists thrown in to round us out. :)
I'm the one and only in my family too. I come from a long line of farmers, ironworkers, loggers, etc. My mom was a SAHM. Didn't graduate from high school. My Dad was an ironworker, went to two years of college and played minor league baseball. Grandparents on mom's side were farmers . . one set wealthy and one set poor. Grandparents on my Dad's side owned a bar and worked the railways. I'm the only kid in my immediate family to graduate from high school and college. Sounds like the "Grapes of Wrath". And I grew up in So. Cal at the beach.

Both of my parents are nurses...they went back during their 40's...I was interested in nsg before they ever were.
Every year, my mom would tell me, "It's not too late to switch to something else..."
But, I never was good at listening to my parents...
