Nursing Job Titles in Triage

When I do Pediatric Telephone Triage I am a Clinican III(obviously RN and we have a clinical ladder- this program is sponsored by two hospitals plus insurances..home based at the start now 50% of the nurse's time in call center) Now my 40hr primary job for a call center I am listed as a Senior Nurse Counselor. We do Managed Care/ Pathways(CHF-COPD)Triage=Adults & Peds.There are 2 of us and the other nurses are (staff level)Triage Nurses.Hope this helps.And as a side bar sometimes titles=compensation...food for thought.

In my unit (ophthalmology ) we only use nurse practitioners grade F and above to answer the phones. We work to strict protocols laid out by our consultants.

Our call center RN's who do nursing triage are called "Resource Nurses"

The center I work for is called P.H.I.L (acronym for Pediatric Health Information Line). We share a large room in the SECSI (Southeast Child Safely Institute) which also houses ARPC (Alabama Regional Poison Control). That was a lot of abbreviations huh? lol

We do Adult/OB/Peds calls for a very large Health Department system, along with 35 additional pediatric practices which represents approx 170 different Peds MDs. We are the "after hours nurse" and when we call Mom or Dad back, we refer to ourselves as "This is the nurse on-call for Dr. SoNSo". As far as the Children's hospital where I work is concerned, we are under the "umbrella" of nursing service, but not considered a "staff nurse" like those in units or floors, meaning that we are "below" them because we don't actually "touch" or "see" our patients. They truely have no clue as to how acute your triage and assessment skills have to be to triage and properly care for an "unseen" and "untouched" child. We are listed as "Staff Nurse I" under job title....but don't you dare think we are "worthy" of that title since all we do is sit on our bottoms playing on the computer and talking on the phone.

That's all we do in telephone triage......RIGHT?

pssst, kidz..let me tell ya a secret.

Don't worry about how "they" look at ya'll...they're paying you, as a TT Staff Nurse I the same thing they're paying this floor Staff Nurse II..biggest difference? This one's been here 14yrs...six of them as a nurse..and do you think they're paying us a dime when we're not here? I worked all weekends when this bonus thing started..didn't get a dime of bonus pay because it was "scheduled" (which is why I changed schedules)..so don't worry about being "below" (which I've never heard anyone say TT isn't real nursing)..you're still being paid as good or ABOVE :) Also, you get to avoid alot of the NS BS, don't ya?

I am interested in hearing what title telephone triage staff nurses officially use. At our call center, they are "Health Information Specialist" I do not always feel this conveys what these nurses are during and am considering submitting a request for a new title to our compensation folks. Thanks for any input.

well, in the clinic I work, I am referred to as the "triage nurse"...but the patients and receptionists often refer to us as the "advise nurse"....I prefer triage nurse, with the brief defination of what triage means...very few patients really know...they always read my name badge and say, "triage? what is triage?"....

fontbodybodyhi kidz. i think i work in this peds hospital (if it's located in b'ham) any way, i'm now out on medical leave and it seems as though i will probably have to go out on disability. i am looking for a way to continue to support myself without doing floor nursing. this sounds ideal. there's nothing wrjong with my mind or my voice. are they hiring? do they do any home triage? any and all info will be appreciated. thanks. :balloons:
