FIRED and REPORTED to the BON

Nurses Safety

Published

I would love to have ANY input on this subject. Where is the rule book on giving PRN pain medication ?? Does anyone out there have any input ?? :uhoh3:

It's highly bizarre. You would think they would clarify the policy with you.

A thirty minute window is allowed. This sounds stupid. I would report the nurse who fired you and have her answer for this. You can report

something to the unemployment board. As well as take her to court for defaming you.

I recently had a weird thing happen to me. With twenty years of experience in cardiac, I was working for a travel agency called Nurses in Partnership which much to my fault I did not check them out before I took the first contract with them. I had quit my full time job and almost the next day they called me with promise of a job, so I took it and it was a great job. Then, the contract money ran out with the hospital and the Agency could only find me a job across the state. I went to Largo Hospital to work Step down. I got sick and was working a total of nine days at orientation and the day before my vacation for a week, I called in as I had blood coming from several sores on my arms. Not knowing the area I pulled into a Hess gas station as my cell phone did not work. Then, I borrowed a phone and got through to the

Nursing Supervisor who told me, " Go Home, I have you covered as you called several times and I got the message. " I did call the Agency earlier and told them that this was not the greatest assignment and why was I rushed into this job. Now I know as no one wanted it.

SO I filed unemployment and I filed the Ethics committee at the hospital. Unemployment stated ABSENTEEISM is not a cause for MISCONDUCT> I won unemployment. I may take both the Agency and Hospital to court. We have to fight these people to make a difference in our profession. I would like some more supporters. Are you out there ? Thank you for your assistance as it is greatly appreciated.

I do not have a union and have found the Florida Nursing Assoc in the past useless. Nurses have to unit.

Next time Mustang, take the meds out and give thirty but use the correct time in the records. This maybe not exactly but it covers you and the higher ups.

Ummmm, you're joking right. Am I understanding you correctly, your telling her to falsify records?!

My brother is a lawyer and says defamation is worth a car and a house! Thought you might like to hear that! I've sued a Doctor for personal reasons and won. You have to take care of yourself. I wish you the best.

That was kinda how I took it too. Probably not a good idea to encourage this type of solution, however I think I get the point...honesty and doing your job and accurate documentation results in firing rather that be warned and instructed hardly encourages anyone to feel to safe.

Its such a pity that this happened to you. What did your BON do about it?You are just victim of circumstance but you dont have to keep blaming yourself. Its one of those things in life that happens to make us strong in life. You are in my prayers.God'll strenghten you in any decision you take.

I have had my meeting with the BON, along with my 2 attorneys, it really was not as bad as I expected but who wants to be in that situation to start with ??

After having 2 job offers made to me only to be taken back because of this dark cloud I have been pushed to the very limit of my personal constitution. I know something good will come of this but it still seems so unfair. I want to make someone pay for this year of my life that I have lost.

My attorney does not think I have a wrongful termination case because there was no discrimination, but we have documentation, provided by the hospital, that shows 3 other nurses doing the same thing and they still work there. To me there could be a case made for discrimination.

I want to thank everyone for their words or encouragement, they mean a lot. I am not a bad person, or nurse, I just dont know how I got here to this place but I sure do know I cant wait to get out of it.

My unemployment runs out in about 2 more weeks, OUCH, hopefully this will all be over by the end of the month and I can move on with my life !!

This seems so highly unfair. I had a simular circumstance until the state changed the first time rule for a complaint. I have had two other complaints that dropped which I learned how to do it here through a good attorney. " Try not to get excited," he said, and " use your head

not your emotions." It worked for me.

Getting back to what happened to me. I was working an agency and had for a long time at a facility, about 8 months and one day a nursing assistant did not like me and perhaps had a resentment of some kind. She wrote me up got someone to sign it and then submitted it to my agency. I was fired and got two complaints in one day, one was for not putting a bed at 45 degrees and I had the bed at 30 which trying to give the pt. a cup of water while he smacked his lips and he was contracted. Now, in order to do this was difficult.

Also the other complaint was I used the word A-- for donkey and the nursing assistant did not like it. The last complaint was dropped. I went to heck and back with the first because I was caught off guard and not knowing what to do. If only I had had a good attorney it would have been dropped, I am sure. So what I have learned is never attack a complaint. Give as little as possible information and write letters that are extremely good mannered. For instance, get information off the web, maybe medline that will back up a 30 min. rule and then, thank the BON or whomever for bringing this to your attention and treat it as a learning experience.

Today I have worked through what was done to me. The complaint was not put into the BON by the Nursing Assistant but by my staffer at my agency who at the time was my roommate and she lost her job as the agency closed in my town. She got mad at me and sent the complaint to state without telling anyone. She said damaging things about me also. I have had to pray for her to forgive her. She is the poor one as I am still working as a nurse.

I had to take a year's probation, this was over five years ago. Then today, the BON rules changed again where first time complaints are dropped. It is something I have had to get over. It is difficult to explain at times everytime I go for a job. And, also someday I will have something done about it if it does not drop from the record. The thing is stupid to me. Nothing happened to the patient. I dropped a cup of water that day apparently while someone was looking. I hope this is not too much detail but tells a story and helps someone else. Thank you. Good luck to you. Listen to the attorneys, they will help you and follow this all the way through then you can no more and be done with it and move on, it is not cause to loose a license. Do what the BON says. Keep moving on. I have my hard times and good times. I keep going. It is all in a day's work.

BYE Keep us posted. Thank you again, for letting me share. Please keep sharing.

Thank you for sharing your plight as it helps me too, I can share what happened to me. For this, we all get help. Have a great day ! You are wonderful people and good night. I just need a new job, I am looking and got people looking for me. Something always comes up.

Heidisuz, I feel your pain, and know what you have been through. My husband, who has been very supportive, is currently working 2 jobs. The BON keeps saying I can work, I have no restrictions at this time, but as long as a potential employer goes to verify my license and it reads ALERT:UNDER INVESTIGATION..... what do you think is going to happen?? They move on tho the next person in line. I have 3 children, so I cant just go get a job at McDonalds or something, I wouldnt make enough to pay childcare !! My main fear is that my husband, who is prone to fall asleep at the wheel even with a full nights sleep, will be on his way home or to work and crash and kill himself and/or someone else, then where will my children and myself be ??

I have gotten 3 letters of support per my attorney's advice and they were presented to the BON at my meeting. Two were from long time co-workers and one from my former boss. The committee meeting on my case will be held October 25th, I pray this will all be over then, and life can get back to normal. Christmas is comming, and the thought of SANTA not being able to get my children what they wish for just about breaks my heart.

Thanks for your story, and your warm words of support, advice, and encouragement. It is just a shame that anyone can file a complaint and put you through this. I understand many complaints have merrit, but many do not and it is just not fair, especially when the process takes so long to go through.:crying2:
