Congrats, I too went straight into L/D after graduation, it is tough to learn how to be a nurse AND a L/D nurse at the same time, but possible and WONDERFUL !! Dont be afraid to ask questions, it will be a long time before you feel like standing on your own two feet but stay with it, take it all in ,YOU'LL LOVE IT !!!

Spouses scheduling conflict
I know it wont help with this situation, but PRN is also a great alternative. My husband and I have 3 small children, daycare is CRAZY, so I worked PRN. I could choose the day & the shift I wanted to be on I could sign up for 4, 8, or 12 hours if I wanted that way I could work around his rotating shift schedule and we didnt need daycare. The down fall is no bennies and your hours are not guaranteed so you would need to be on a buisy unit or PRN in more than one if you really had to have full-time hours. Good Luck !!

Seriously considering
I think a lot of nursing students have anxieties about shots and IVs, I know I did. I also know that almost every laboring patient that comes in the door, depending on where you work, gets an IV and blood drawn. I went straight into L/D after graduation and was there for 10 years. I LOVE IT, but there are many sick people there too, and nursing school is hard enough without hateing what you are doing if it is other than an OB rotation. You can do that work with your ADN or BSN, but remember, you have to pass all the other semesters of school to graduate and what if you cant get an OB position right out of school, sometimes it is very difficult with no experience, are you willing to work in another area until you get the job you want.........and........will you hate every minute of life if you do take that position in an area other than OB ?? Just my . Also, another possability could be that you got into your clinicals and found another area that you were passionate about !! Good luck in what ever decision you make, but the decision to go into nursing school should have nothing to do with a bandwagon !!

IUD retrieval??
In my nursing experience, they will wait toward the end of her period, because the cervix is slightly dilated at this point, use an ultrasound to visualize and go in with a forcep type instrument to pull it out. Pretty much the same experience personally, I have had 3 of them, and this was the case with 1 of them.

Cheers and Geers from our Peers !!
:yelclap: I would like to CHEER a nurse I met here at allnurses not too long ago. We had what you would call a :smiley_abdiffering of oppinions. At times we were both very irritated at the other, I was taking it personally because the post was about me. She took her nearly 50 years of experience, and looked at things differently. She thanked some of us on the thread that told her how her comments came across, and could hurt others !! She didnt let all her years of experience close her mind to others and what they had to say, and how what she said made others feel !! This ended up being one of the most beneficial, and positive threads I have been on so far and I wanted to CHEER her for being such a professional and looking at things differently....you know who you are if you are reading this !! to you !!!! Thanks, I have grown too because of you !!

Hello all, just curious as to what all of the nurses and nurses to be out their have on their minds. What do you have to CHEER about work and life, and what whould you like to GEER about work and life. Any topic goes (as long as it is within an.com rules). Consider this a place to speak about whatever may have made you happy or sad today, and get a little feedback and/or support !! Have a GREAT day, or not, either way share it with us !!

Ever notice this about allnurses?
I am pretty new here and even I have gotten tired of seeing some of the same things over and over, but ya know what I do, I just don't read them. There are plenty of other threads out there of interest, and if you feel so inclined, post in the thread with a link to the older thread, I know being new I would appreciate that, but not being told to "do a search".

I will let everyone know the outcome of "today" when I know something. Thanks to MARIPOSA for bringing this thread back to its initial intent. I did not mean to hijack the thread. Tired of impaired nurses
Lamazeteacher i thank you for your knowledge and input. I do want to make on thing clear though, I was not suspended by the BON. This happened back in April, I lost my job, and I have just now been able to find employment. Understandably, no one wants to hire a RN who is under investigation. All of this will be over tomorrow some time after the BON's monthly meeting. I too am very excited that I have a new job, and you are right to a degree, after 10 years with the same employer I was in the same spot I was when I walked through those doors as a wide eyed new grad, only difference was the years of experience and graduate school under my belt. Well I am going to go for now, today is my wedding ann. and I am going to put the kids to bed and enjoy what is left of it. I know I will not sleep well tonight knowing what will be going on tomorrow, but I will be glad for it to be over.......goodnight, and god bless.

Tired of impaired nurses
You are so right jlsrn, there were many factors that worked against me that day. The main one I feel is that I got lax, I lost respect for the percocet because we give it out like candy. It was easy to forget exactly what the medication was and the respect that the medication needed. I know that it would not have happend if I had not been ill, I had always done an excellent job, I went above and beyond the call on a regular basis and the copy of my employee file that I have shows for it. To imply that I don't have high standards as a healthcare professional is unfair just because I made a mistake. If I had an abuse problem, most people would look at this differently, most not all, it would be looked at like I had a "problem" not that I made a careless nursing error. I am thankful everyday that this has been the most serious thing I have ever done, it has been a good wake up call for me, but it IS NOT the sum total of who I am as a nurse, and what I stand for. Lamazeteacher, it is great that you have been so fortunate in your carreer to "NEVER" do something, I dont think the majority of nurses can say that, but that does not make them bad, careless, or of low standards. I feel that it is because of your "I am a superior nurse to you" attidude that causes people to start threads about nurses eating their young, and question if they want to continue in school or in their career. I do not feel there is anyproblem with holding yourself, and others, to a high standard, we should but we are human. Unfortunately we are in a career that does not have tolerance for human error so we must ALWAYS watch our back, and I failed MYSELF, NO ONE ELSE. I did not harm any patients, despite what you may think, I did not divert narcotics from my employer for my use or anyone elses. To be honest, I am getting tired of defending myself here. I made a mistake, I am paying for it, I HAVE LEARNED FROM IT, and I will grow and be better for it. I came to Allnurses.com because it was such a supportive place, I felt comfortable talking about my experience and getting feedback, it was not until now that I ever felt personally attacked. Lamazeteacher, I have read some of your other posts, I respect your experience but you are not perfect, none of us are ! You seem to be very good at telling others your opinion of what they should do, maybe you should go to work at your states BON so you can make sure that low standard, and careless nurses like myself never get to practice again, or better yet, forget about the legal nurse consultant thing and just become judge and jury. You would think that in your nearly 50 year career, and hats off that is impressive, you would have learned how TO WALK A MILE !!!
