Hello everyone,
I have been reading the threads and you all are so positive
I applied for this scholarship last year and this was the rejection notice I received on Sept 30th 2014
I am second degree student applying for a BSN EFC is 0 and gpa is 3.8
I have 12 year of health care experience as a medical assistant and have worked in FQHC centers and did not have a credit check this year, same as last year,
I live in the mid west- Wisconsin,
I can be honest to say I am unsure exactly what they are looking for to approve anyone for the scholarship
Thank you for submitting your application to the 2014 NURSE Corps Scholarship Program. Your interest in providing nursing care to underserved communities is sincerely appreciated. We regret to inform you that you were not selected to receive a NURSE Corps scholarship award.
The NURSE Corps Scholarship Program has been, and continues to be, extremely competitive. For the 2014 application cycle, we received 2,467 applications and were only able to fund approximately 242. We encourage you to re-apply to the NURSE Corps Scholarship Program in 2015.
Mocapoca, thank you for your help. That sounds like a pretty serious matter. I don't think I have any judgement liens. Do you what type of debts could be judgment liens?
I'm not too sure about that. The 3 things that come to mind are not paying mortgages (foreclosures), car repossessions and maybe credit card debt? Anyone else feel free to chime in at any time. I am not good with interpreting the law!
Do you know exactly what they are checking for in terms of "delinquency"? I know the Application Guidance says any judgment liens that arise from debt owed to the United States? But, what exactly does that mean?
Debt owed to the U.S. Government: Unpaid income taxes, student aid/grant to be repaid (such as a Pell grant disbursed but you dropped out and were required to return the funds that you were not entitled to), refunds owed to the government (miscalculation on income tax return and you were over-refunded and failed to return the excess) , unpaid/delinquent student loans. Unless a federally secured mortgage such as Fannie Mae, mortgage foreclosure does not count neither would credit card or car repossession. This would have been escalated to the court system and you might have a lien on your home or a federal court ordered wage garnishment
I agree that we should be realistic in our expectations for this award. It is a very competitive scholarship... We are all competing against brilliant, involved and experienced future nurses.
I posted a link to the review criteria for the scholarship- it is very extensive. Although the scholarship is need-based, EFC is not part of the criteria. GPA is 10 points out of 100. Essays and demonstrated experience in serving underserved communities are a total of 70 points.
After applicants are scored, they are ranked. The highest ranked are offered the scholarship first.
The credit check is simply a final review. I spoke to a representative today and she told me that they look for defaults in federal loans, bankruptcies, and bad patterns in credit management. She told me that they look for "responsible, good people" who are capable of understanding and managing their service commitment.
She also told me that they're sending notifications everyday. Applicants are given just a few days to accept the award before it is offered to someone else.
The purpose of this scholarship is not to provide a hand up to nursing students, but to provide and incentive for the most capable future nurses to serve/help the neediest patients.
I like to believe that nurses and nurse students are giving people. I pray that we all expressed our passion for serving others in our application. Nurse Corps is looking for the future nurses who demonstrate the strongest desire and promise in serving patients from underserved communities.
I appreciate all the great post of past application decision, calls to the representative and research on some of their terms. It has really given me more information about how they pick applicants. Though I have not receive any information of my credit check yet but I am still having faith. Good luck to everyone.

Danielle,
I believe that only Finalists get credit checks... After reading through the HRSA application review page, I believe that they finished scoring on July 15th... I don't think that they would check everyone's credit knowing who the finalists are.
BUT, applicants are not only scored but also ranked, on a scale from 1-5. I believe that this means that 1st priority applicants will receive notification first, followed 2nd priority applicants, and so on, until all funds are exhausted.
I think that this is why some of last year's applicants whose credit was checked did not receive a scholarship.
