Nursing career with social anxiety

Published

Is it possible to be an introverted nurse with social anxiety? I am interested in the career, ive always liked the idea of being a neonatal nurse since I was a kid, but I assume thats one of the more difficult specialties to get into. I am a very mellow, soft spoken type B person and not sure I could handle the environment....are there others like me? Is nicu nursing hard to get into?

Define "hard to get into".

So be more clear. If you are comparing "hard" to "easy"...well good luck finding an "easy" nursing job.

"liking the idea" of something is different than doing it.

"Hard" to get into, as far as number of positions compared to other specialties. Thanks for your response!

Perception is reality. Instead of being guided by words like "hard" or "easy" define what you want to do and how much effort are you willing to put into it. There is a reason certain careers require certain dedication and work. When you are dealing with life and death with a persons baby you better know what the heck you are doing and not that you took the job because it was "easy" or "hard". I have been a nurse 10 years and it has pushed me to my mental and physical limits many times. Good luck.

Yes! My friend sounds just like you. She was so worried about clinical because of her introverted personality, but she really blossomed in clinical. She was great with patient care and is learning how to better approach social situations. Everyone goes into school with at least one thing they need to work on.
