Nursing Capstone at WGU

Updated:   Published

Hi Everyone,

I'm starting school at WGU in August 2015. My aim is to finish my MSN in leadership in 6 months (I know that I would have to go at a pretty fast pace, but I'm a very determined person).

I have read in one of the post that someone completed it in 7.5 months, and she gave a really wonderful advice on her page.

The one thing that she said is to try working on the capstone right away because it takes about 6 months to complete.

I would like to know how to know to start the capstone- And whats its all about so I can get a head start.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks advance.

I've just applied to WGU for my MSN Education. I'm in Charlotte, NC. Definitely excited to get things started! Any advice from those who currently enrolled or have graduated would be great to hear!!

Hi, I have applied to WGU as well for my MSN in Education. I should be starting around September. What post did you get advice from? Can you share that post with me. Thanks

I work in a very small surgery center. Does the capstone have to be at your place of employment?

Specializes in Nurse Leader specializing in Labor & Delivery.

Yes, which is why you must be employed as an RN during the program. Because a lot of what's required in the program is stuff you need to do through your work.

I spoke to someone at the University yesterday I was told that it does not have to be at my place in employment, and they would assist me in finding an alternate location. I have an idea that's more related to education working with nursing students they told me that project would be fine because I'm doing the education program.

Oh, I have no knowledge on what is required for the education track. This thread is specifically about the leadership track.

In leadership, there are specifically two projects that have to be done at your place of employment. One is to evaluate the effectiveness of a QI project that has been completed already, and one is to complete your own QI project (which is the capstone).

I have heard of several people who did both leadership and education capstones that were not at their place of employment so it's not 100% required, however it's most likely more difficult. You may need an affiliation agreement with the alternate facility (which takes time), and as Klone mentioned, you'll need to comment on a project already completed so it's going to require more research time.

Also, as my capstone mentor mentioned, finding a healthcare facility willing to work with a student that doesn't work there can also be a daunting task.

My capstone is going to related t nursing students it will not take place at a medical facility. Thank you all for your help in trying to find as much info as possible and get a head start.

Really. So maybe I can start working on my project now. I'm suppose to start in September too. I just started as Director of Nursing (In October 2014) at my current Job, and I'm always doing Quality Improvement project for the company and the nurses that I supervise. This would be great opportunity to write a report on what I'm doing.

Any advice on how to start? Is there a specific Format that I must follow?
