Nursing and body piercings

Published

Do you believe hospital administration has the right to prohibit wearing tongue piercings or multiple ear piercings while on duty?

Yes because it makes some patients uncomfortable, and I'm sure its a lot easier to work with a patient that trusts you rather then one that you make nervous. If you are going to be a professional, dress professionally.

My being a male makes some patients uncomfortable...Get over it...It's the person, not the adornments (or appendages)

Is the word perhaps "adversarial(?sp)"?

As unnecessarily defiling the human body is considered wrong by my spiritual beliefs, I do not pierce or tattoo anything.QUOTE]

That's why I like this shirt....

but we all can have our views now cant we :)

I am a student nurse, old enough to be the grandmother of some of you. I got a nose piercing and a tattoo about a year ago. I must say I love the look on me. I wear a little tiny stud in my nose and my tattoo is small and tasteful (a japanese character meaning love and compassion) and in a not-too-conspicuous spot.

My nursing program prohibits body piercings, so I wear a clear plastic plug thingy on clinical days so you really can't see it at all. I got the piercing knowing that I would probably have to disguise it when I am at school or work. That's OK with me. I believe eventually it'll be no big deal, but some of you are right, it may be disturbing to an elder and that's not something I want to do. I don't want to create any barriers between me and a patient. When I am off work, I am free to wear it and that's fine.

Let's not look at someone with a piercing and judge them as trashy though! I am a respectful woman, I have three loving children, I get all As in school and I am planning a fulfilling career as a registered nurse. I have a nose piercing too. That's just me.

Keep loving each other....

Specializes in 5 yrs OR, ASU Pre-Op 2 yr. ER.

My concern on the piercings is along the lines of the pt. getting ahold and taking a big yank. Not for looks.

Sure, they have the right to enact whatever policies they see fit. Doesn't mean that the people who oppose them have to work there.

I personally would love to have a facial piercing, but my ultra-conservative job and coworkers wouldn't appreciate it too much. I value my job, so I live without the body mods (although I do have four easily hidden tattoos). :)

Oh, and call me white trash if you want just because I have tattoos... here's the clincher, I live in a trailer too! Ha! :D

Anyone who calls people "trash" for having tattoos or piercings has made it very clear on what they think of all human beings in general though. :)

The day of graduation, that'll be my first day of "trash" too, since i'll be getting my first celebratory tattoo. And getting the belly repierced. :D

(Spent 6 years living in a trailer, moved out at 18, so i'm wondering if that makes me 6 year trash or lifetime trash though? :uhoh21: j/k)

Absolutely - I remember I was first interested in piercings because I grew up with it - my mother (bless her I wont say her age she might kill me)

Had a nose piercing and would wear a stud in it or a small gold ring sometimes...so when I was 16 she took me and I got it pierced - not with some gun at the local Claire's but by a professional piercer...

While I too, dont wear any thing at work and refrain from expressing who I believe is my true self (pierced, tattooed, dyed hair - pink) I have to conform to what society wants and expects of me because there are people who still judge based on outer appearances....

what a shame...

Yeah, nobody should be sportin' those big J-Lo hoops unless they want a torn lobe...

If you would like to know more about the risks of certain types of piercings i.e. eyebrow, lobe, cartilage, etc. you can go:

please note this site does have graphic pictures of piercings on it that include piercings "below the belt" if you choose to view them...

Yeah, speaking of discrimination....

Completely. I guess I'm not offended very easily - call me trash all day long, the opinion of some anonymous entity on a bulletin board doesn't mean a hill of beans in comparison to the kind, intelligent woman that I know that I am, body mods or no. :)

Piercings can be removed, and tattoo ink fades - but trailer trash is forever baby! LOL :D

I'm not exactly sure what you are saying here but I will just assume nothing...

All I know is that I come from someplace where I have seen people with tattoos of racist symbols in N.Idaho and I know it is not something that I want to embody...

I also dont feel that it is appropriate to separate people based on race or gender or anything (but that can bring up so many debates I wont go into it)

I feel that way because I have so many really wonderful friends from school that are Native American, Asian and so many other races...some are also gay...or bisexual...some are even drag queens....

And when we go out to eat and I sit down with my friends and my other friend might be in drag and then another friend is sitting there I expect the waiter to give us all the exact same service...not to make one of us sit in the "colored" section or the "drag queen" section

Yeah, a perfect ideological world would be nice but it isnt going to happen
