Is this legal?
http://www.azbn.gov/documents/advisory_opinion/AO ABANDONMENT OF PATIENTS.pdf See: I, sub section 'E' I would be hard pressed to imagine any state's BON not having similar language. And if some don't address the topic, there's nothing stopping one from quitting after said shift. "Mandatory" OT exists b/c nurses continue to allow it. Worst case scenario, they could only fire you for not coming in ON YOUR DAY OFF. BONs do not get involved in HR issues (though they are consistently the #1 type of complaint that comes in) Yours is an HR issue. They are bullying you Do not tolerate. Staying over your shift, or coming in to help out (early, or on a day off) is YOUR choice only, not theirs Shame on them for doing this Shame on nurses for laying down and taking it

How would you be 'forced' to come in on a day off? What will they do? Drive over and drag you in? Please... I work my scheduled time. I never call in. If they were to (last minute, after schedule is posted) schedule me on a day when I am not scheduled (without me agreeing to it), I would happily stay home (and nap of course) Simple really. It's my day off. Staffing the unit is not your responsibility, it's theirs. Showing up for your pre agreed upon (by you and your scheduler) shifts is your basic requirement...Nothing more. And if they call you to come in early: Just say no. It's easy to do, and there should be no guilt involved. It's your time, period! You cannot be charged for abandonment for 'forced' OT, or 'no call no show' or for leaving at your scheduled time. Report off to charge, and leave, at your scheduled time, period.

Do you call the doctor at night for low B/P's on night shift?
A one time BP should be looked at in context, along with symptomatic versus not...A single 'low' BP means nothing without qualifiers.

Vent thread... when to send a pt out
ALWAYS call the receiving facility when you send a patient ANYWHERE. (in any setting...this includes ER nurses sending patients back) I am an old ER nurse, and it chapped my hide when I didn't get a call when patients came from any another medical facility. I teach nursing, and hammer this point home to my students. It's just plain rude not to call, and bad outcomes will happen when we don't share clinical (and any other pertinent) info. A lack of communication is the worst thing we can do for our patients! And send as much paperwork as you think is appropriate (H&P, MAR, nurses' notes, face sheet) And seeing that your pt ended up in the ICU, you made the correct call to send, period.

NANDA- workup
a fractured hip does not cause poor circulation and poor circulation is not necessarily a result of a fractured hip... it wouldn't work...
-
NANDA- workup
immobility from fx hip also could use r/t: poor nutrition AEB inability to change positions q 2 hours (by herself) the why would be in the body of the care plan use measurable outcomes, and ACTIVE interventions

Can i get all of your opinions? Confused
I think you've already answered your own question...
-
Holding our tongues vs things we really want to say!
Always wanted to ask: "Why did both of you (parents) bring in the 2 other (well) kids, in with your "sick" kiddo, who only has a temp of 101, at 0300 on a school night..."
-
I hate it!!!
It's not politically incorrect to ask the question Michigan... Why on earth would one want to bear a child he/she CANNOT afford?? We have the right to ask this question
-
Holding our tongues vs things we really want to say!
Actually worked with a guy who frequently said: "You came here for THAT?" "If that were my kid, I wouldn't have brought him" "That laceration isn't very big at all" "If it were me, I would go home"

Need To Vent!!!
Ah yes, the "while I'm here I'll get seen too" visit... one of my favorites... right up there with the family plan of 7 pts, all with different last names, coming in 2 hours past what should be their bedtime, all for snotty noses (oh, and they have an appointment tomorrow morning, but "didn't want to wait") Sung to the tune of "On the Road again..." "On the dole again, just can't wait to get on the dole again...takin' taxis to the ER just to see all of my friends, I can't wait to get on the dole again"

I hate it!!!
That's not the point...They likely don't pay anything...Public assistance foots the bill..

Medicaid. Is it being abused?
Excellent post traumanurse... When I was a kid, I (purposely) broke windows in what I thought was an abandoned building...The owners found out it was me (small town) and my parents paid the owner back... Imagine them telling the building owner that they couldn't afford to replace the windows, and then sticking the town with the bill... It's all about responsibility...

Medicaid. Is it being abused?
I'm just tired of paying for others' poor choices...If a family member makes a poor choice, the family should come together and take responsibility, not thrust it upon the taxpayers... My sister had a kid at 16, and my parents stepped up to the plate...Not once was anyone on the dole...My niece is now 20, cuts hair, and lives on her own...All things she did on her own (borrowed tuition, lives w/ a roommate, rides her bicycle to work). This self sufficiency is not a "blessing" but plain hard work and self reliance, which she learned from my parents, and my sister...

Medicaid. Is it being abused?
"Had to be put on Medicaid" No...That was your choice... I was working prn 2 years ago...My 2 and 4 year olds were 90/month each...Cigna HMO, great coverage...Opened the phone book, and shopped around... It's my responsibility, not the state's
