Why all nurse should join the ANA! It is customary that Doctors join the AMA but it isn't customary among nurses to join the ANA. We need to grow in numbers and in strength and we do this by becoming a member of the ANA and encouraging and educating co-workers and other nurses to play their part and become a member!Did you know that nurses make up the largest percentage of healthcare workers? We outnumber doctors, therapists, medical aides and all other healthcare workers. This is why it is important for us to join the ANA (American Nurses Association) in order to gain power and have a political agenda that favors all nurses. In school we were taught about the importance of becoming a member of the ANA and how important it is that all nurses belong. Just like doctors have the American Medical Association, nurses have the American Nurses Association however; it is customary that all medical doctors join the AMA once they begin to practice. This commonality among doctors has not spread to the nursing community as of yet. The AMA works in favor of doctors and political decisions with fewer members than working nurses. Practicing nurses make up a large percentage of healthcare workers but this is not reflected by ANA. ANA works to benefit us as practicing nurses but first we must have enough people backing the association which means all nurses should sign up to become a member. Why should we all join? Why not!? It is a huge benefit to us as nurses.

Weight behind this association gives up power to create policy and law. We need more members of the ANA in order to have a say in laws, policies, and rights. Please support all of the nurses and become a member of the ANA today. You can also donate to the political group that is represented by the ANA when singing up. This entity fights for our rights as nurses. With the highest number of working nurses in healthcare we should be number one in helping decide and change policies. In numbers we have strength. You can join the ANA and donate to the political division as well as becoming a member and participating actively. I hope to see many people sign up for membership through the American nurses Association and look forward to your feedback.

Please share any information you have about the American nurses Association so that nonmembers can find their place in the American nurses Association. What has the American nurses Association done for you, if you are a member? Can you give some advice for nonmembers about the benefits afforded to you as a member?

I personally am not a fan of the ANA. I belong to my states nurses organization and I have always belonged to my specialty organization the ENA. But over the years I have failed to see the ANA make any real intervention on the nurses behalf and recently losing further creditability as they continue to perpetuate the "Nursing Shortage" myth. I feel they are more in the camp of the hospitals and big business for little is done about staffing ratios, violence against nurses, and protecting the title of Nurse.

The ANA barely does anything lately for nurses. They keep perpetuating the shortage of nurses based on data that does not longer applies to the current situation. They also have done nothing about unsafe patient ratios, and other work conditions. They have done nothing about stagnant or reduced wages for nurses. They have done nothing about positions gone unfilled. In my opinion the ANA is a joke compared to what it was once. Their agenda is not aligned with the need of nurses, and is more based on their dream world in which for some reason they are living on.

All the state nursing associations are constituent members of the ANA, and you join by belonging to your state nursing association. V. few people are direct "members" of the ANA.

Also, FWIW, only a small percentage of US physicians belong to the AMA.

If you wanted to advocate for an organization, some basic fact checking would have been in order.

The ANA has traditionally operated via constituent membership from state nursing associations; however, at least two state nursing associations (California & New York) have withdrawn from the ANA structure.

The statement in your post regarding physician membership in the American Medical Association is invalid: according to the AMA's 2012 annual report, their member numbers included approximately 25% of U.S. physicians.

In IL, joining the ANA via INA (IL Nurses Association) costs >$500/year!!!!! It is $390 for INA/ANA + district dues!

Yikes.

I do belong to the IL Society of Advanced Practice Nurses at $230/year. And for that - I get a lot of bang for my buck.

Congrats on the ER position!!! I have always belonged to the ENA...they have GREAT conferences. Chicago and New Orleans were my favs.
