Once again this year we are getting education sessions on such scintillating topics as "Advances in Wound Care" and "Quality Improvement Intitiatives at Capital Health" in the theater of the medical school attached to our hospital. Yee haw! If anyone wants to attend it will be on their own time, of course, because we don't have the staff to send people to inservices on new equipment and that sort of thing, never mind "fluff". I've heard that they're trying to change things and make Nurses' Week more about nurses and their needs, but I will believe it when I see it. However, our chaplain has begun putting little baskets of personal care items like nice soaps, hand cream, fem hy necessities and little notes of appreciation in our staff bathroom. She gets it!

an angel pin from the Dollar store (or, I saw one there just like it)

Has anyone ever worked for TENET? Its a nationwide chain. They are absolutely horrible but that is not the point of this post.

For nurses week one year, a few years ago, Tenet gave out a CD. It had songs like "You are the sunshine of my life" but the next line was "doctors always need you around". They changed up the words to a bunch of songs to make it sung to nurses. It was horrible!

I've worked for Tenet..know the feeling :uhoh3:

At our facility, each nurse gets a free movie pass to our local theater, a thank you letter signed by all of the nursing directors and the management team makes banana splits for all.

One year, we had a casino day--slot machines, blackjack tables and all kinds of treats.

Last year we had massage therapists come to the hospital to give each nurse a 10 minute neck and shoulder massage.

I'd like to work at your hospital!!

We are gettin' JACK from admin, as we wouldn't want to offend the MA's at the clinic. So our small group of triage nurses in Internal Medicine are giving OURSELVES a catered lunch from the Olive Garden, and I am making some colorful signs and some streamers to celebrate ourselves.

That's the way to do it! Maybe if nurses do a little celebrating themselves, it will catch on better. Lord, considering what nurses do it is SO SAD they can't spring for something nice! But if they won't, I love the idea of the nurses celebrating themselves!:lol2:

Well folks - Our facility has a nursing week committee - the committee traditionally contacts vendors, local businesses, physicians, etc - we have oodles of nice goodies - $50.00 dinners, etc. Each unit staff (and yes even the ancillary units with nurses) are placed in a drawing - assuring a good % of the staff receive gifts. Some of the gifts are the routine marketing items, though they are the more nicer items.

In addition, a buffet at times that are convenient for staff coming on or off shift; The buffet is furnished by the hospital. Great American Cookies are sent to the floors as well at least once during the week.

The reason that nurses week is becoming hospital week is that the two "weeks" are scheduled back to back and at times even overlap. Sad, but true.

Oh another thing - In Kentucky we have a Nursing Excellence Banquet - Our facility sends 8-10 nurses nominated by their peers to the overnight banquet...expense paid.

With the reimbursement crunch - meningful recognition is very difficult, but I believe we have truly tried to express appreciation of a JOB WELL DONE.

"So what could a nurse manager give her staff so that they feel appreciated?"

How about a little more support and time spent on the unit, instead of in meetings?

How about a few less platitudes and more action?

How about ensuring adequate staffing, and less excuses about, "Well, they did thier best", while asking if any of us would like to stay overtime?

How about challenging the administration to do more, instead of coming back and asking us to make the best of a bad situation?

Here is a novel idea..........how about your paycheck. Last I remember, this is a free country, if you are so miserable why not quit. This thread sounds kinda like kids at Christmas......"I got stinking underwear and socks again from Grandma."

So, with nurses week coming up, I was fondly remembering all the neat swag my employer has offered me as a token of their appreciation.

Over the last four years as a nurse I have received -

A calculator that broke in one week,

A fanny pack that was made out of sheet plastic,

A coupon for a free cookie from the cafeteria,

Shoelaces with the hospital logo,

A lunch bag made out of the same sheet plastic as the fanny pack,

And the only gift that was ever usefull, a badge holder like the drug reps give out where your badge is on a string with a spring.

so what kind of gifts does your institution pony up for?

There have to be some worse ones than mine.

We all know that a cheap trinket from our employer will ensure our future longevity with said institution. So what made you stay working where you are.

Here is a novel thought.........how about your paycheck. If people are so miserable- then quit. Sounds like kids at Christmas......."I only got underwear and socks from Grandma."

I've always bought myself a gift for Nurses Week. It bothers me for every other category of employee to horn in on our week, yes, they are valuable, too, but they aren't NURSES!!!

I make sure DH knows when May 6 is too!

I think the cheap trinkets are more insulting than just a thank you. One year a few of the docs sent big fruit baskets. Most years, nothing. And longevity pins or anything with logos make me feel sad, like, this is my worth? Gift cards are really nice, and even a coupon for a small ham, turkey or pizza would be appreciated. Anything given to one shift "to share" means the other two shifts, or staff not on duty, get the wrappers or leftovers, or if they are lucky, win the empty basket in a raffle. The nicest gifts we got were thank you notes written out by each manager, with a new funny coffee cup filled with Hershey kisses. We got those triangular shaped pens once, too. Impossible to hold on to. (I think they were drug rep freebies).
