obviously, i would love to hear what your facility is doing to honor nurses week. my budget this year is approximately $600.00 however, i have involved subway restaurant, domino s pizza, and vegan/vegetarian restaurant, to donate meals for all shifts including the weekend. in addition, i involved also a nursing scrub store to come to the hospital and bring their latest merchandise since they are having their grand opening, within the activities during our week they will put on a fashion show, plus every hour on the hour they will donate a full set of white-scrubs to one lucky nurse. moreover, i contacted one of the largest dept. store here and they will donate 20 ipads which will be raffled, including a one 40" emerson lcd t.v. with a blue ray component. btw, the nurses won't have to pay anything for the raffle just add their name to the raffle tickets. furthermore, i have included a well known on-line travel company which will donate a 6 night with a companion to a all-inclusive caribbean vacation to a lucky winner. having said that, every year we select the nurse of the year, which receives a one year privileged parking space, a dinner voucher for two plus a complete one day spa indulgent. lastly, on the last day of nurses week we honor florence nightingale birthday by coming to work in our traditional "white uniform" which one lucky nurse will receive a $100.00 gift certificate to a major clothing store, for the most authentic traditional white uniform ensemble, as we celebrate with a traditional luau party lunch . wishing all of the members, and the staff of all-nurses.com the best always... let the celebrations begin.... mahalo & aloha~

Hello All,

Looking at all of your nurses' week activities makes me green with envy that my facility does not do any of the things mentioned above. My boss is so busy that we don't get activities like yours. We will probably get a t-shirt and that's all. I would like to work at the facility that is giving away the prizes. I live in a simple rural area in southern utah so we don't get much. Just a pat on the back and a t-shirt. But ya'll have fun.

Gitano - I wish all dept heads, nsg and non-nsg, were as passionate as you in the spirit of trying to show appreciation and the value of your staff. Your endeavors to provide them bene's is just awesome. Therefore in honor of nursing week, you have my vote for Dept Head/DON of the year!!! Ty. PS-your staff must be awesome, too.

Thats some good stuff. Like most others...BBQ, wear white day (which is actually not very popular with any of our actual nurses- especially as we are required to wear all day everyday white or blue), and a guess that nurse from photos of nurses from nursing graduation. There is a gift involved. I am praying it isn't a mug, although I liked the mug, I spent about 3 hours discussing how giving a covered mug as a nurses week gift did not mean they were to use it to consume in patient care areas! I heart my job!

May be you should post "How to ask for donations from XYZ" for all nurse managers to see.

That way we might have a better nurse week. :nurse:

You're an amazing nurse manager! Where do you work?- I'm coming to get a job there :)! I'm so glad your doing that for your nurses because I'm sure that really makes a difference in the way the staff feel about their job and in turn treat the patients. If I ever go into management, I definitely want to make nurse week fun- perhaps even do special prizes for the nurses who can tell the best and worst patient stories and how they handled the situation.

that's a great idea, which i will incorporate in a future post. however, i been so busy making sure that all of the vendors are scheduled at the right time, plus organizing the fashion show and the nurse of the year award ceremony, plus let's not forget that i still have to function @ full capacity in my every day position, and maintain a household as a single parent for my 3 children. if only i could find more hours in a day this way... i could accomplish it all

Whoa can I work with you? Seem like you truly care for your staff!!

They used to give us each a t-shirt. One year it said "we share our gifts to care for you." I love that shirt and have almost worn it to death.

This year, nothing.

We are planning our own potluck and made signs for the nurses' work area that showcase us and our many years of combined experience. The facility nor our umbrella org. have planned ZERO for us so we are having a weeklong celebration of nurses on our own.

wow gitanorn, that's definitely awesome you've planned so well! if i ever rise to your level someday, i would love to do the same for my team. i've seen that if upper management is able to take care of their team, then the team will know how much they are valued and thus will be more loyal to the hospital and work their best for their patients.

i know for sure that you're definitely an inspiration to young nurses like me and how to be a leader, so thank you so much for what you do. and what takes the cake is taking care of 3 children! children are important in my life and someday when i'm a father i wish to balance work and family well, too.

All I can say is wow! Is this for real??? Your staff is very lucky. My old job used to go all out; administration cooked us bbq and served us which was nice lol. We'd also get some kind of small gift every day of nurses' week. Eventually it evolved into....nothing given at all. I'm not holding my breath for my current job. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

This year we are getting free lunch in cafeteria one day, another day Spanish food will be catered, free massages, free Tai-Chi lessons, free nutrition class, free makeovers(yes that is what I said), and a Chaplain will come speak to our department. Not bad.
