Nurses struggling with mental illness

Nurses Disabilities

Published

I was just wondering if there are any other nurses who struggle with mental illness. It seems to be one disability that is met with little tolerance and support in the medical field. I do have major co-morbid mental illness, Major depression/PTSD/DID, and have had many problems in my career. I have been in therapy and on meds for a long time and have worked very hard to be functional, and I have suprised myself by what I have been able to achieve. Currently, I am a hospice nurse in a residential setting and it seems that I have found my niche. It doesn't aggravate my illness too much. I am very busy at times and most of my job revolves in much cognitive thinking and decision making about the best ways to respond to a patient's emerging or existing symptoms, and in assessing patients to see where they are in the dying process, plus lots of educating to patients and families. My extensive personal trauma background has made me able to have a different perspective on death and don't see it as the scary thing that is SO SAD, that a lot of people do. Plus, because of the things that I have been through, I am more able to be compassionate and understanding of patients and their fears. I especially do well with patients with existing mental illness or lots of anxiety. I notice that a lot of nurses have little tolerance for a patients anxiety and are not willing to take the extra time to walk them through things and provide the extra reassurance that they need.

Yes, there are some nursing jobs that I don't think I would be able to do because of the fast on the spot life and death action necessary. ER and Trauma/Burn are pretty much out for me. But thats OK. A lot of nurses couldn't handle doing what I do either for their own reasons. We are all suited to certain things.

Having mental illness doesn't automatically make you unsuited for the nursing profession. Even though I have heard many times, "what are you doing here?" "Shouldn't you be doing something else, less stressful?"

I am here and am doing the thing I am suited for. Yes sometimes I have to take time off due to my illness, but its no different than somone who has flare ups of a chronic physical illness like lupus, chronic fatigue, or fibromyalgia.

I would like to know how other nurses have coped with their own illness and their nursing careers.

To me this thread is a safe place to share, but if I was working I'd probably worry that a coworker would recognize me. Anyway, usually we understand each other (most of us have BEEN THERE!). I'm awfully grateful that I can vent here!

Yes I agree...we need to be careful sharing any identifying info if we're working. Not all nurses are open minded are they. Safer to share here anonymously. :)

Y'all have helped me so much here. It feels good to be able to share my feelings, and fears without judgement. Zoe, you have helped me A LOT in that regard. The courage that everyody has here is incredible.

I have read every single message in this thread and I must say I am in awe of all of you. I am so impressed with the way you all have dealt with or are dealing with your illnesses. I have always been an believer in that nurses are real human beings and not super heros. Nurses have lives of their own and their own problems. I think some people on this board forget that and think that nurses are "professionals" 24/7/365. It bugs me that some nurses are not open minded when it comes to mental illness. While I have no problems with mental illnesses, it doesn't make me better than any of you. If anything you all are probably stronger than anyone who considers themselves "normal". Sorry to interrupt your discussion I just thought you guys deserved to be appaulded.

Kris thank you! It is so wonderful to hear this. You know, when I went on "sick leave" I was given 12 weeks before they would fill my position. In that time I heard from ONE person I worked with, and that was someone I'd known previously.

Sad really. Anyone who has surgery or some physical illness at least gets flowers.

I know, I know, people don't want the person to feel uncomfortable.

But the only reason we feel uncomfortable is because no one talks about it!

So that is why your note means so much to me.:flowersfo

Hey WW - this is what happens when you show up for your own life, when you are real, authentic - you present yourself to the world without frills and puffed up pretend stuff. And voila, we get to meet other real people, like you.;)

God bless you!!!

God bless you too Zoe. God bless all of you. And thank you so much.

thank you soooooo much :)

I get my third exam back today :uhoh3: the weather is GREAT and I am soooo mantic. I studied so hard for this exam and finished first and now I am scared that I failed, and now I feel like I am losing control of my emotionings. At work I went from happy happy :rotfl: to :flamesonb (I try to stick to myself when I am in this mood as not to lash out at others). Am I the only one going though anything like this now? the change of season everyone likes and but at the moment I am finding it hard. Am I the only one?

I've been in and out but not bad at all - I get nervous tho you know? cuz I know it can get bad quickly and I don't like "bad".

Very common for us to have trouble this time of year. Sleep is one of the most important treatments and if you aren't getting it call your Dr - it can be lethal!

Meanwhile, we are ALLOWED TO ENJOY life as well - so don't be worried and afraid and stuff all the time - let yourself see how really truly GOOD that flower smells, or how pretty the water is!
