Nurses smoking weed?

Published

Hey nurses,

In honor of "420" tomorrow... As a health-care professional, what are your thoughts on smoking weed? Any nurses out there that smoke a joint here and there?

Cheers.

Congress lifted the Federal Ban on medical marijuana on December of 2015. They allow the states to decide. Not too well known, did not get too much coverage.

That's not quite true.

...On both occasions, various news outlets exaggerated the impact of the Rohrabacher-Farr amendment, leading many medical marijuana supporters to mistakenly believe Congress had legalized it....

Forbes Welcome

There's a lot of legal ambiguity in states where marijuana is legal or legal-ish since it is illegal at the federal level, but licensure for nurses is handled at the state level by state agencies. It presents a jurisdictional issue, and a series of technicalities that make for a complicated issue.

My state has a medicinal marijuana program and marijuana is decriminalized, meaning that possession of less than a certain amount carries a nominal civil fine. To my knowledge, the state board of nursing has not taken a definitive stance on the issue, but is obviously leaning towards being against use of marijuana by nurses. As far as patient counseling, what nurses are being told is the obvious "don't smoke up before or during work, and don't show up to work stoned" kind of patient teaching. What's more interesting to me is that, since it is decriminalized here, would the board of nursing have grounds to act against someone without a complaint being lodged against their practice but rather simply because they're known to use marijuana? I think that's something that will just have to be challenged in court when the case comes up, and it totally will eventually.

This is so pretentious.

Federal law allowing the use of Marijuana is coming in the near future and nurses will definitely be getting high! :-P So get ready ********!

since pot is grown better in Canada,, we have better soil, and so does CO., I smoke it recreationally. The comments made are evasive & niave. Pot is better than booze! But dont get stupid over it. You dont do a joint before work, because it smells better than a cigarette. Cigs are rancid to a patient. Pot has a sweet smell to it, but MIND YOU, back in the day of GOOD pot, it was different, but you still smoke. If you are an addictive type, yes, it hits the hot spot in the brain, and will lead, IF YOU want it to, to heavier.

Dont be an arxxx. Its your job, use your head. But if someone at work asks you, deny it!

because it smells better than a cigarette. !

Hi Roy. :)

Pot does not smell better. It stinks. Especially on a rainy day when your clothes are damp and the smell of smoke is very apparent.

Coming from a farm family, I'd say you can't just make a blanket statement that farm land is better in Canada than the US. We are a huge country with lots of different kinds of terrain and soil and a huge agricultural industry.

edited to add - lots of pot farms in my neck of the woods as well. ;)

It is totally illegal here, I have no problems with it though!

Go to your PCP and ask for a marinol Rx for your intractable nausea. Drug test problem solved. Example: RN, HIV+ partner, PrEP make them extremely nauseous and difficult to keep meds down. Takes a hit before taking med each night, problem solved. Drug test positive for THC, show Rx for marinol...pass. Few companies want to spend hundreds on additional confirmatory testing that may, or may not, be able to tell the difference between the two. Plus if they can't break it down to being different, they open themselves to lawsuits for discrimination based on diagnosed medical condition.
