are nurses satisfied?

Nurses Relations

Published

I am a nursing student and I had my first clinical I was SOOO excited! I thought it was so cool and I was so happy! The patients were so nice and funny. ( i was in a nursing home) but I noticed the staff didnt share my enthusiasm. The nurses were nice but they didnt seem excited about thier jobs and were a little on autopilot. Are all nurses like that after a while? Do you lose satisfaction in being a nurse over time.

Specializes in They know this too!.

lmao @ autopilot I never thought of it that way!

Yea I can definitely relate. I've been on a unit where patients stay for about a month or so and its soooooo easy to get bored! No...I don't want to feel like I"m walking on pins and needles all the time but variety can be good!

Specializes in Tele, Stepdown, Med/Surg, education.

i love my job and i'm pretty enthusiastic about it most days. although i don't walk around singing i am happy to go to work. when i was a little girl i wanted to be a school teacher but ended up falling into nursing and started to like it a lot. now 6 years later i teach nursing do 3 prn shifts a month and i have tremendous job satisfaction. i have the best of both worlds. i never get bored; i'm not getting burnout at the bedside. i love it.

OMG, 1 clinical and she/he has ALREADY begun the old nurse/new nurse debate!

When will it stop!

It seemed like a valid question for someone new to the field.

To the OP. I have seen many nurses that seemed to be burned out, I can definitely see how it can happen. I have also seen many that have been in the field for 20 plus years and the enthusiasm they have for nursing just oozes out of their pores. 2 of these people I had for Clinical instructors. Not all days are great and there will be rough periods but they said they enjoy what they do and have a real passion for it and are very happy with their job 95% of the time. Keep your enthusiasm, it will help make Nursing School a wonderful experience :)
