I belong to a parenting forum.
A girl made a post about the parenting class she took, where she was given some information regarding breastfeeding that she didn't think was correct. She had asked her mom, who told her something different. So she came on to clarify. One of the other members responds to her to listen to her mother, because nurses really are not the smartest people.
I normally just try to ignore the ignorant things people say, it's the internet after all. But that just aggravated me. First off, no where in her post did she say a nurse taught the class. Secondly, way to stereotype a group of people. Here, let me give you a pretend report on one of my ICU patients, and see how much you understand. Then tell me how "not smart" nurses really are. That would be like me saying Stay at home moms are lazy and that is why they don't work. Ugh.. sorry just needed to vent to people who understand. I don't know why it bugged me so much, but it did.
I had a pt who was a lawyer and treated me like I was an idiot. I recommended asking the Dr when he rounded the next day about adding an anti-inflammatory to his pain regimin. Funny the Dr ordered exactly what I had said, without saying anything to him beforehand. I told the pt great minds think alike. He treats me with a tad more respect after that LOL.
I was being a smidge hyperbolic. But, I stand by the gist of it.Nursing has low educational standards (if we're comparing it to other actual professions. If were comparing it to skilled trades, then it's about on par.) and one of the easiest licensing exams around. The NCLEX used to be much more comprehensive. These are facts.
This just highlights your lack of understanding on how the NCLEX is structured.
I don't think she was criticizing him...she was just using some examples of what politicians have said.
Well actually, I'd have used some examples from South African political bloopers, but most of them are either so tragic they make you want to cry...like (former president) Thabo Mbeki's statement that he doesn't know anyone who has died of AIDS, or just plain insulting, like our current president Jacob Zuma, who was accused of rape some years ago, stating during his trial that "women who wear skirts are asking for sex...." Not very funny.
George Bush and Dan Quayle, however, have a whole string of side-splitting faux pas to their respective names. I can't help but love both of them....
I'm pretty sure that giving examples of what someone said and insuinuating they are stupid for having said them is a criticism.
Allow me to explain further...
she wasn't criticising George as a PERSON, she was saying that look, politicians say dumb things so does that mean they are all dumb? No...
And also, I've said dumb things but does that necessarily make me dumb or all nurses dumb? No!
I can tell you, "oh that was a bad thing Johnny did when he lied to his mom." See there, I didn't say, "oh, Johnny is a bad person!" Big difference.
So....she was saying, in my take, that George said dumb things, not that he is dumb.

We need to clarify the George Bush we're talking about is Dad (#41) For some reason back in the late '80s I found him an interesting character and with a baby at home, time and close proximity to the CU library (also a designated library for the fed so transcripts of all sorts of obscure government hearings etc) I learned more than anyone really should about a politician. He laughed at his own manglement of the English language and had Dana Carvey (the guy who made fun of him on SNL) to the East Room after he lost to Clinton - where there were two GBs at once "naht gonna do-it - wouldn't be prudent" Do they have presidential "blooper" books in South Africa? I agree the AIDS comment no funny, though. :)

Nurses are not only intelligent, they actually receive much more communication skills training and patient teaching skills than do physicians. The latter two skills would be more than enough to overcome and outstrip the value provided by professions who may (or may not) have more book knowledge...Hands down!
