Hi I am not a nurse yet, but are there any nurses out there with nose piercings? Do they make you take it out at work?

nowhere in my post does it say i don't believe cultures practice tatooing and piercings or i think it is odd.

I seriously doubt that nose rings have to be worn religiously.... they are ADORNMENTS!!!!

Uhhh... Which one is it??

I wasn't speaking of banning them, I was speaking of not hiring based on their presence. Bringing involuntary things into the argument, like FGM or the like, is a straw man. We're speaking about things people choose to do to themselves.

and after they realized slavery was not right they abolished it[/quote']

Well, there was ... a bit of unpleasantness in between.

... i'm not seeing your point..... nowhere in my post does it say i don't believe cultures practice tatooing and piercings or i think it is odd. i chose to say that for hospitals to say they don't allow multiple nose, ear, lip tongue rings and skulls etc on their health care professionals, is perfectly within the right of the hospital.
But we're not discussing the hospital policy. We're discussing someone declaring it's a sign of no self-respect and that they wouldn't even consider hiring someone who did it. There is a difference.

oh for goodness sake. Most hospitals do not allow piercings/ visible tatoos... whether they ban them or don't hire people with them...

Where do you get your numbers? Both hospitals in town and the one closest to me allow them.

So as many threads do, this one kind of got thrown off track by turning into a "professionalism" debate. To answer the original thread, there are nurses with nose piercings. I had one back in the day, lol! I had to remove it for nursing school and never replaced it. We were only allowed one earring in each ear at the bottom of the lobe, uniform must be white and neatly pressed, and we had random inspections (seriously, we did). I've worked in different facilities and I've seen many nose piercings, usually small studs (most realize that hoops were rather dangerous as they could be snatched out by patients, just like hoops in the ears). You're not a nurse yet, are you in the program? Just curious if it's allowed there. I would recommend not wearing the nose ring to the interview. Once you get hired you can find out if it's allowable in the dress code and go from there. Different facilities, different rules. Good Luck in your journey!!!

The upcoming generation does not view piercings and tattoos as unprofessional.

I am in my 20s and I find piercings and visible tattoos very unprofessional.

So, basically: maybe, if you get hired, and it's okay at your facility. Or no, it's unprofessional, but if it's okay at your facility. Or you won't even get an interview, but that's my decision and not the facility. OR! they're fine, whatever, can you do your job? I'm sure I'm missing a few permutations here, but ygtp.

I will say that if you got one as a fashion statement and you wear it to an interview, I'd consider *that* unprofessional. But I'm not going to tell you you have no self respect. It's all related to context, ain't it? If you work LTC on a youth floor, maybe it's entirely appropriate in that context. If you work LTC on a geri floor, it probably isn't. But it comes down to your facility's policy, as with just about every other thing we discuss around here.

This is neither here nor there, but I'm entering it anyway. Back in 1980 I had an 89 y.o female pt. who had seven tattoos, like a bracelet, a couple rings, a necklace. Some co-workers were absolutely scandalized, but I thought, Wow, she must've been one racy chick in her youth! There are tattoos and then there are TATTOOS! I wouldn't want to see swastikas and skulls on a nurse, but I think some tattoos are beautiful. I don't have any, but I don't think less of those who do. But ultimately as many have said, it's up to the faciilitys code and that's pretty much the bottom line, isn't it.

I was taught to always present your self in the least offensive way possible...as we can see from the postings not everyone has the same view on issues or feel the same way about certain things..Remember as nurses we are catering to elderly, children etc...and a nose piercing may not be the most appropriate accessory.:dancgrp:

I am a nurse with a nose piercing. I do wear it to work without any issues. When I was teaching clinicals in an ADN program I did take it out. It is really going to be facility dependent. As a new nurse it might be a little difficult for you to wear it to work. I find that people still tend to associate piercings with rebellion. It is a shame that nurses are not judge on their abilities but their appearance alone.

A lot depends on the nature of the business and the company that owns or manages a facility. In LTCs, most piercings and visible tattoos are banned out of respect for their elderly clients, who come from a time when "body art" was considered low-class, and as for multiple piercings and unnatural hair colors........well, sometimes they're quite scary-looking. I remember one girl who came into work one day with neon-pink hair, and she frightened the bejeebers out of a couple of the more demented LOLs on the unit. They didn't recognize her, and they both screamed when she tried to do their AM cares.

Personally, as an "older" person myself I don't mind tattoos so much, except they look funny on the sagging thighs of a 70-something woman who got hers in the military. (That's a story for a whole 'nother thread.:clown:) But other than the occasional tasteful diamond nose stud, piercings anywhere but the ears just gross me out, and I find them ugly and disfiguring to boot. And while I'm sure that attitude will change as the younger generations take charge, that time has not arrived yet........and the look is simply NOT a professional one. Sorry.

I am extremely interested in seeing what the LTC population looks like in 30-40 years from now with all the inflatable parts and nips and tucks we now have. LOL
