Hi, dear friends:
Nowadays, chinese hospitals like to choose the nursing staff according to the stature.They like to put sentence like' no one under 155cm can apply for the job' in the working request.And they also like to choose the one who has a beautiful face.
I am just wondering ,are their any similar requests for nurses in Australia too? If so ,what are the standards?
How tall have nurses to be? How beautiful have the nurses to be?
lol is this a joke.......
mmmm thank god i live qld australia. BUt so true they might not state it but during the interview ...well of course you are judged on presentation as well.
Hopefully if i'm ever a patient though my nurse will be kind and knowledable and takes the best care of me regardless of her looks , humor my come in handy though.
It's unfair to hire people based on their looks in this profession. However, yes, it happens and is continuing to happen as we speak.
Most companies who hire "pretty" nurses are usually clinics, spas or those whose services are centered in the beauty industry like make-up or other cosmetic companies, and other facilities who offer cosmetic surgery. You will usually see their ads with phrases like "must be pretty attractive, tall, with weight proportional to height."
But this shouldn't discourage you lucia. Just remember that the best nurses are the ones working in the critical units- areas which definitely do not favor nurses based on appearance.
Just do your own thing, be confident and be the best nurse you can be. :)
I'm not too sure bout being tall and skinny..but I think it would be very practical if nurses had very long arms...(and more than 2) imagine all the work you could do more efficiently..and you could carry bedpans away without having to inhale the odours they carry..I think the perfect nurse would be pretty similar to an octapus...tall and skinny?????? maybe they have a problem with uniforms...sounds like they may have a one size fits one size policy..whatever...now i realise why we have so many asian nurses working here.....
I come from South East Asia originally.....and I have come across employment advertisements there saying they want someone with pleasing personality, not more than 27 years old, with weight proportionate to height, to name only some requirements! And those are ridiculous and unjust requirements, I believe!

Sadly that is very common across SE Asia.
But don't feel bad, it is not exclusive to nursing. I saw a posted ad here (Philippines) for a book keeper "Must be between 5'1" and 5'4" no more than 110lbs, slender, attractive, fair-skinned with pleasant personality."
I just shook my head and laughed. In the USA if some idiot posted a job listing like that he'd either be fined or everyone would assume he was hiring for a stripper bar.
Sadly it is a modern expression of the antiquated obsession with youth that some people in Asian cultures have.
Young = perfect
Aged = flawed
Oddly that only applies to women... for men it seems to be the opposite wherein:
Young = inexperienced
Aged = wise
Tch...
I'll hire the oldest, ugliest cuss in the bunch if she/he can balance my books right!
